An attempt to beat a world record (their own record) to knock down more than 4.1 million dominoes ended in a tragedy for a sparrow in Holland. It was shot after it accidentaly knocked down 23,000 dominoes and almost ruined the record attempt. This sparrow is classified as an endangered species in Holland. Activists climbed the barricades, the bird has it´s own website and they even made a song about this sparrow. The guy who shot the sparrow has received death threats.

Warning to sparrows: Stay outside

TV firm Endemol said it felt "terrible" about the killing. The head of a bird protection agency appealed for calm.

Expatica's Dutch news in English: Final aria for a tragic sparrow

A song about the sparrow shot dead for endangering the attempt to break the world record for domino toppling goes on sale in the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The Dutch-language song entitled 'De Domino Mus' (The Domino Sparrow) was recorded by DJs Lexie and Wout out the local radio station 'Eenhoorn' in the Dutch province of Friesland.

The bird already has a website created in its honour. The Dutch-language site (www.dodemus.nl) had recorded 398,000 hits by 4pm on Monday.

The site was set up last week following the news that a common sparrow — a protected species in the Netherlands — was shot dead with an air gun on Monday.

Canada.com: Dutch TV show claims domino world record in event marred by dead sparrow

The sparrow was killed by an exterminator with an air rifle Monday after it knocked down 23,000 dominoes. The killing was seen by many as an overreaction and angered animal rights and bird protection groups.

It later emerged the house sparrow, though common, is classified as an endangered species in the Netherlands. Its population has halved in the last 20 years to fewer than one million breeding pairs, due to human encroachment on its territory.

Domino Day organizers claimed 4,155,476 dominoes successfully fell Friday, bettering their own record of 3.9 million set last year and approved by Guinness World Records.

Who is exaggerating here? The activists who send death threats or the people killing the bird while trying to beat their own record? Whoever is to blame the poor bird is dead now. R.I.P.

It's a BIRD for gods sake. They die every day. These people rank right up there with the ones that think it's ok to murder doctors that perform abortions. Yes, it's sad they didn't try to let the bird out, or capture it, but GET OVER IT already. I don't think killing it was right, but sending death threats over a BIRD? Good god, what's next?!
