I was walking up my steps today, from my first floor to second, and I caught a shadow out of the corner of my eye. I know this is a sign of a haunted houes, however, what else should I look for?

its not a sign of a haunted house. Its a common perception in peripheral vision. Why would a spirit only be detectable in sensory input from that range?

It could be a VERY guileful (sneaky as it were) apparition that is so quick it can only be seen out of the corner of eyes.

Maybe our peripheral vision is actually a portal into another dimension and we are to oblivious to even notice.

Or it could have been a piece of dryer lint on the viewers eyelash.

Just some ideas.

Jburns you could give us more than 2 sentences in your post you know. And the question isn't what should you look for, but more like what have YOU seen so far?

Why do you think the house is haunted? Have you other experiences in this residence that seem odd or stick in your memory for one reason or another?

I think most as in the majority of buildings especially older ones have some sort of energy, spirit or vibe with them, but a place isn't really considered haunted unless that energy, spirit or vibe is trying to make itself known.

and while that shadow that crosses the corner of your eye does suggest that something may be lurking around, it doesn't necessarily always mean so. Sometimes real things, such as animals, insects, birds can move quickly past us and we pick up on it in our peripheral sight.

So what else have you noticed??

Nothing else has been happening, recently anyhow. A few months ago, I had a couple pens that would mysteriously vanish, and then I'd find them where I thought I had left them. The same happened with my wallet one day. My house is 80+ years old, with several known occupants. I'm not quite sure of it's past, but I bet I could find out.

The only questions now are, have you looked at your credit card statement lately and does any of these "known occupants" have a new and unexplained stereo system?

I should have said "previous" known occupants. And yes, my credit card has only been used to pay for my ISP.
