According to Diarrhea News, a New York entrepreneur got "the best effort so far this week to link the name of a movie-star to an Anti-Diarrhea product". Mel Gibson was suffering from extreme chronic diarrhea caused by “Montezuma’s Revenge”, and the entrepreneur quickly sent Gibson package of a new product which is supposed to cure chronic diarrhea.

BEST EFFORT SO FAR THIS WEEK TO LINK THE NAME OF A MOVIE STAR TO AN ANTI-DIARRHEA PRODUCT

November 12, 2005

NEW YORK ENTREPRENEUR TRIES TO SAVE MEL GIBSON FROM “MONTEZUMA’S REVENGE” WITH NEW ANTI-DIARRHEA PRODUCT

Upon hearing that actor Mel Gibson was suffering from extreme chronic diarrhea caused by “Montezuma’s Revenge” while filming his latest project in Mexico, New York-area entrepreneur Micah Portney, founder of a health and nutritional supplement company called ZEO Health, quickly sent him a package of a new product called Esdifan that Portney believes controls and even cures chronic diarrhea.

Portney, himself is a lifelong sufferer of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which can also cause constant diarrhea. He spent years and much of his own money searching for a cure until he discovered a proprietary formula which could help stop the diarrhea. He now has a patent pending on the use of a specific mineral in the formula for treating diarrhea.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

Sounds like a good marketing trick. I really hope for Gibson´s sake that it works. I´ve never heard about Montezuma’s Revenge before. Anyone know what causes this?

Drinking dirty water was believed to be the cause. That is a myth, per se.
Used to be an old running joke and saying when we went into Mexico to party in my younger days, Hellmutt.
MONTEZUMA'S REVENGE

Montezuma's Revenge aka: Traveler's Diarrhea

Traveler's diarrhea describes diarrhea that frequently attacks those visiting third-world or developing countries. Traveler's diarrhea diet refers to the appropriate food and fluids to consume if you develop traveler's diarrhea.

Bacteria and the toxins that cause traveler's diarrhea occur in areas with contaminated water supplies, poor sewage systems, or inadequate food handling. People living in these areas often don't get sick because their bodies have developed some degree of immunity.

Traveler's diarrhea is rarely life-threatening for adults. It is more serious in children as it can frequently lead to dehydration. You can decrease your risk of developing traveler's diarrhea by avoiding water and food that may be contaminated. The goal of traveler's diarrhea diet is to minimize the impact of this illness and avoid severe dehydration.

If your from the USA drinking the water in Mexico can cause Montezuma's revenge.

Its just a phrase to describe when people get Diarrhoea when travelling to foreign parts and eating food or drinking water they aren't accustomed to.

Maybe the diarrhea-feed will tell you something about aloe vera juice, I don´t know... The feed won´t play you any songs, but it will give you "Diarrhea News continually updated from thousands of sources around the net" into your "RSS-reader"...

For those not familiar with "feeds" and "RSS", read about it here: What is RSS? (BBC)

Where it comes from:

Montezuma's Revenge (var. Moctezuma's Revenge) refers to the conquering of the Aztecs by European invaders led by Hernán Cortés (1485-1547). Moctezuma II (1466-1520), the emperor of Aztecs at the time, was killed by his own people, in revolt against the Spanish invaders, so that anything bad that happens in Mexico to descendants from the invaders, or any non-Mexican, for that matter, could be interpreted as a post-humous "revenge" of the emperor against his enemies. wiki

More info:

Montezuma or Moctezuma [mok–] , 1480?–1520, Aztec emperor (c.1502–1520). He is sometimes called Montezuma II to distinguish him from Montezuma I (ruled 1440–69), who carried on conquests around Tenochtitlán. His reign was marked by incessant warfare, and his despotic rule caused grave unrest. When Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico he was thus able to gain native allies, notably in the province of the Tlaxcala. Montezuma, believing the Spanish to be descendants of the god Quetzalcoatl, tried to persuade them to leave by offering rich gifts. That failing, he received them in his splendid court at Tenochtitlán in Nov., 1519. Cortés later seized him as a hostage and attempted to govern through him. In June, 1520, the Aztec rose against the Spanish. Montezuma was killed, although whether by the Spanish or the Aztec is not certain. His successor died a few months later and was replaced by Cuauhtémoc.

Montezuma's name is linked by a legend to fabulous treasures that the Spanish appropriated and presumably lost at sea. source

montezumas revenge is when you get the runs from drinking mexican water. its called montezumas revenge because according to legend montezuma cursed the past, present and future foreign people that go to his country because of cabeza de vaca and other conquistadors. thank you other member for the research. its odd that of the times ive been to mexico ive never had the runs when drinking local water ... well we drank our water straight from a well .... it tasted better than the water here from our pipes and it was cool and treated for bacteria and stuff.... and no the water was not brown it was crystal clear.

It´s amazing how dirty water you can actually drink as long as you have the right equipment, like i.e. this straw:

Survival Water Filter Straw

At about an ounce in weight, this survival water filter straw takes out giardia. It will also make you the star of the backpacking trip with friends and colleagues

  • Filters out giardia and crypto.
  • Suck from a bottle, or directly from a slimy water hole.

Nice and slimy survival water near Sturgis in the Rocky Mountains

People who travel from Mexico into the United States and drink local water have the same intestinal problems as those who travel into Mexico from the US and drink the local water there.

It's caused by bacteria in the water.
Your system is acclimated to local water.

Change locations, whether a foreign country or simply a different county or state and you'll have different bacteria along with intestinal problems.

One reason it's a good idea to drink bottled/filtered water in the plastic bottles when traveling.
People make fun of the cost of bottled water, comparing it to the price of gasoline for example, but it's a valuable product for travelers.

Fwiw - I'm not associated with water bottlers, but simply a cautious citizen who avoids problems with strange water.

Thats strange you either have a hardy tolerance to bacteria or are very lucky. Every time I went to mexico I never took the chance, wouldnt even get ice in my drinks because thats made with mexican tap.

That might have been overly cautious of me though. But Id rather be safe then sorry. Nothing ruins a vacation like the runs...
