homepage icons and windows grab

Every time I send a new shortcut to my homepage, it has a nice distinct little icon which windows then 'grabs' and changes to thier boring blue squares. Is there some way to stop this thievery of individualism?

I notice there are some shortcut icons which windows never changes and I can't figure out how they manage that.
