Iran Film Ban Attempts to Curtail Freedoms

TEHRAN, Iran - There won't be any liquor-swilling God-denyers on the Iranian silver screen any time soon. Drug takers, secularists, liberals, anarchists and feminists are out, too.

That's what a committee of Islamic clerics, led by new hard-line President Ahmadinejad, ruled earlier this week when it banned foreign films. The clerics singled out in the ban elements of Western culture that were judged as affronts to the government's vision of Iran's Muslim culture.

With the decision, Iranians felt one of the first cultural reversals of the opening to the outside world they enjoyed under their former reformist President Mohammad Khatami.

And the ban, designed to wipe out what clerics call "corrupt Western culture," is not going down well with many in Iran.

let's invade them and run the country amuk into freedom and liberties. Then, maybe, we can go to India where displays of homosexuality call for regular lynchings.

Since the introduction of Western culture to Iranians through satellites, prostitution, drug abuse and usage of alcohol has hit the roof. So perhaps, just like the US has stopped the authors of Iranian, Cuban and Sudanese origin from publishing their views in the US, Iran is just returning the favour.

This being said I am all for freedom of speech, however if a something erodes the values and norms of society, it should be stopped.

And may I ask how you come to the conclusion that "its great to live in Iran"? How many times have you visited and how long did you live there?
