Rocky Mountain News: Geologist says Himalayan quakes could kill millions

October 11, 2005

Saturday's 7.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in a region where University of Colorado geologist Roger Bilham says 50 million people are at risk from great Himalayan quakes.

More than a million people could be killed if a great earthquake occurs near one of the megacities in the Ganges River plain, Bilham wrote. The capital cities of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and several others with more than a million inhabitants are vulnerable, according to Bilham, who has studied the region for more than 25 years.

Saturday's quake occurred 55 miles north-northeast of Islamabad, Pakistan, at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the geological survey. At least one - and possibly as many as seven - magnitude 8.1 to 8.3 earthquakes are overdue along the Himalayas, Bilham and his colleagues concluded.

This is really bad news for the people living in that area. We may not have seen the worst yet. The Mag 7.6/7.7 quake last Saturday may have killed 50,000 people. We could have another big one soon. One that might be worse.
