In an announcement today, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said that US counter terrorism forces have obtained a letter reportedly written by Al Qaeda
number 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the suspected leader of Al Qaeda operations in Iraq.
In the letter, it is alledged that current tactics employed by the insurgency may be alienating the "muslim masses". It goes further to say that
their leadership is being crippled by continuing arrests and killings, and that they almost resigned to defeat in Afghanistan.

An intercepted letter from al-Qaeda's number two to its leader in Iraq warns insurgents' tactics may alienate the wider Muslim population, the US
says.
The letter appeared to be from Osama bin Laden's deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.
He did not show the letter or say how or where it was obtained, but said it was considered authentic and recent.
The missive warned that the network faced crises in many areas, he said.
"Zawahiri says that they've lost many of their key leaders and that they've virtually resigned themselves to defeat in Afghanistan, that their
lines of communication and funding have been severely disrupted," Mr Whitman told reporters on Thursday.

I am not sure how to take this announcement. It seems all to good to be true. When I first read of it, I thought that this could be a very good ploy
at propaganda.
The letter is detailing exactly what the coalition have been hoping for, but the ominous lack of an actual "letter" or even a photocopy of the text
has rung alarm bells.
Whilst it cannot be disputed that
some progress has been made in eliminating the heads of the terrorist networks, the nature of the beast is
that there is always someone willing to take their place and there never has been a shortage of funds for terrorist actions.
Many wealthy families and individuals in the Middle East covertly support these groups and provide logistical and financial aid, so to go so far and
claim that you have a "mystery" letter, which they have yet to produce, in which it is written that Al Qaeda is on its last legs, seems to be coming
from the dreams of a few in the White House rather than actual eveidence of such a thing.
