Hippy quote of the day dedicated to Whaaa:

'Old hippies don't die, they just lie low until the laughter stops and their time comes round again.'
Joseph Gallivan

My favourite 60's Hippie Activist - Abbie Hoffman

Here is his bio and a great photo taken by Richard Avedon before he started doing fashion models. I mean 'snapping' fashion models. I'm also including the photo but it might be banned as it contains a naughty word:

Abbie Hoffman
(November 30, 1936 - April 12, 1989)

Activist/author of Steal This Book. Countercultural icon of the 1960's known for his rejection and parody of corporate America. Invented the term "yippies" (Youth International Party). During a major anti-war demonstration, he organized an "Exorcism of the Pentagon," in which over 50,000 people surrounded the Pentagon in an effort to levitate the building with their combined psychic energy. He remained a full-time activist until 1973, when he was arrested for the sale of coc aine. Facing a mandatory life sentence, Hoffman went underground and disappeared for 6 years - during which time he had plastic surgery and nervous breakdowns.

Committed suicide the same year George HW Bush assumed office.

In the beginning the "movement" started by a bunch of freespirited artists, writers, and musicians that saw improvasation as a basis for a new artistic movement. This freedom was embraced by the young and promptly commercialized by the Madison ave. ad men. Still the spirit of HOPE that the world would see that freedom, love and live and let live could florish.

The powers that be were threatened by the spirit of freedom. They were not about to relenquish the CONTROL the military industrial complex had established.

The Hippy movement was doomed from the start. As a social experiment that allowed freedom of expression no matter how bizarre; actually died from it's own excesses. However the artistic component started by the "beats" and expanded by the Hippys florishes today with an added component of cyberpunk sensibilities.

The overall feeling of HOPE that the 60s counter-culture created has been coopted by the current forces of darkness. The fashions of the young refelect this and is echoed by the old. No Color!! Still in the souls of many, the tie dye, psychadelic, extended jam, heart beats strong!! The control freaks of the world are frustrated that no matter hard they try, the spirit of the hippies can never be controled because the "mystical" credo "live and let live" makes so much sense. The spirit of man really only seeks peace, love and understanding. I hope we can find it again! However....

It's a brave new world; welcome to the monkey house!

And the quote of the day.....

"Erotic politicians, that's what we are. We're interested in anything about revolt, disorder, chaos and activity that appears to have no meaning."
