I'm gonna guess this is the best place for it. Anyway, here it goes...

I was reading in some unexplained mysteries book about a pair of children whose skin was green taken in by some village in the medieval times. It gave a basic few facts about them, like they couldn't speak, didn't know where they came from, etc.. They were human though however. Eventually I believe it said they turned the normal white-ish skin color for a caucasian.

So anyway, I was wondering if anyone has anymore information on this happening. I found it quite interesting, and I can't find jack. (Admittedly, I only searched for about 5 minutes before school)

Quote:
A modern writer, British folklorist Katharine Briggs, says, "This is one of those curiously convincing and realistic fairy anecdotes which are occasionally to be found in the medieval chronicles."

And:
Another recent chronicler, Paul Harris, speculates that the children were not aliens from another realm but simply lost, undernourished children who had wandered into flint mines in the vicinity of Thetford Forest, near the village of Fordham St. Martin. "Perhaps from the twilight of the thick woodlands the children could see a less forested and therefore sunnier land across the river Lark," he writes. They may have spoken in an English dialect "unintelligible to the insular 12th Century farmworkers of Woolpit."

If I remember correctly, they claimed to come from an underworld beneath ground. The girl was supposed to have died early, but the boy should have lived on. Cant remember for how long though.

Nah the boy died first and the girl lived. She learned english eventually, and married some well to do guy.

It seems most people jsut believe they lived in a cave far in the earth and never came out.

Thats probably right.

But I'm pretty confident in the fact that the two children claimed that they came from an 'underworld' with no sky...

Yes, I read that story in a book called House of Evil. I was 10 yrs old and reading scary bedtime stories. The book came out in the 70's and has alot of stories supposedly true accounts of weird things that go bump in the night.

Its okay to start a new thread on this. The one I linked to is over a year old or something.

Its when there is a current thread about a subject that we dont want double postings.

I have done a bit of research on chlorosis and malnourishment last night after i have read this thread. it says that extreme malnourishment can result in a green pallor. a green pallor is different from having green skin. green skin is like that witch from the broadway play wicked or having skin the color of grass or a lime.

A slight greenish cast would not have caused the whole village to wonder in amazement. thier color was very odd and unnatural for a human being. People's intuition told them that these chilren are very odd and not from this world. I think a person can understand how the subconcious mind which is much smarter than the concious mind can guide a person to realize that the color of these kids indicated that they were not from here.

I've heard about the malnourishment thing, I'll have to look it up for myself later.

However the source I got the original text from said the skin wasn't a slight tinge, it was full on green.

it sounds like one of the very few mythical tales that can be answered by science, (i.e. green skin caused by malnoutrishion.) or maybe .. there is a gerat civilization of mole people, waiting to conquer the earth!! that doesnt sound so bad.

Im not so sure about that.. Think about it, people at that time was very suspecious and would probably expect this to be some kind of monster. They believed the world was populated with strange beings you know.. And afterall, green skin isnt normal.

How would a green girl fare against a normal color skinned woman of the same physical type and basic physical beauty?

To most people it would be repulsive. It's not normal. It be quite like being with someone who's obese when you're a twig.

It'd just be human nature for them to think of her as bad/evil/whatever

just a facetious question.
but we can apply occams razor in this situation. the most simple explanation is the most correct one. I am going to pin these kids as iron deficient people from a town a few miles away.

Oh well, if that's what you believe fine by me. It just doesn't make sense to me.

My cousin had a big problem with iron deficiency he wouldn't eat as a kid. He didn't turn green but his nails were pure white. It was kinda creepy. Otherwise he's fine now save for the occasional tiny spot of white.

www.nlm.nih.gov...

maybe these kids have copper poisoning?

Its either something that they ate that made them green or that they were not fully human.
it is possible that these children were not human
