Approximately 20 to 35 thousand illegal immigrants that were living in the Katrina devastated areas of Mississippi and Louisiana are afraid to seek help from the goverment. Pres. Vicente Fox of Mexico is urging these people to seek assistance through the Mexican Consulate but few are responding. Fox also has stated that the United States has promised not to send illegal immigrants home. This statement by Vicente has not been confirmed by Washington
Rumors abound of deportations etc even though the US has suspended (for 45 days) a requirement that forces employers to check a workers identification.

NEW ORLEANS — Some sneak into shelters at night and then slip out in the morning, praying they won't be noticed. Others avoid government help altogether, preferring to ride out the chaos and destruction alone in a foreign land.

For illegal immigrants, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (search) has meant not only living without a home, money or belongings, but also steering clear of the government officials who have flocked to the area, for fear of deportation.

Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants live in the hardest-hit areas, although nobody knows exactly how many. Jeffrey Passel of the Pew Hispanic Center (search) gave a conservative estimate of 20,000 to 35,000 in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Although I am against illegal immigration in the US, I feel very sorry for these people who seem to have been lost in the mix of what has happened in these areas. They need to co-operate with the rescue workers before they suffer anymore hardships.

Seems like Homeland (In)Security is still keeping mum on not turning illegal immigrants over to law enforcement agencies or addure them that they woiuld not be deported

Spokeswoman Joanna Gonzalez refused to directly answer repeated questions about whether the agency can assure illegal immigrants that their information would not be turned over to law enforcement agencies when they seek help.

Why should we use the resources and aid on illegal immigrants? This may seem like a bad comment but seriously, illegal immigrants are a drain on society and cause many problems, if they arn't putting anything into society then why let them take?

Obviously a human is a human and everyone affected should recieve help but if America really wants to solve the issue of illegal immigrants they need to be totally cut off.

I hope everyone, illegal or legal, is receiving aid and help and I hope after the situation is cleared the illegal immigrants will realise America could have told them to "do one" and not offer them any aid.
