O.k. I read this and its just scary how bad things are. How can canadians fly from over half a continent away and still manage to beat the U.S. rescue ppl to a district and be the first on the scene.

Guess reports like these just add more fuel to the fire that will burn for a long time to come.

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Reuters) - A Canadian search-and-rescue team reached a flooded New Orleans suburb to help save trapped residents five days before the U.S. military, a Louisiana state senator said on Wednesday.

The Canadians beat both the Army and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. disaster response department, to St. Bernard Parish east of New Orleans, where flood waters are still 8 feet deep in places, Sen. Walter Boasso said.

Could it be that everyone else was still sitting around waiting for the Commander-in-Chief to give the order?

Thats disgusting!!!!

Who allowed those canadians just to go in there and help people! They should have waited for proper authorization first until the required number of people had died.

Just to walk in and help people is not acceptable in today's society. Their initiative, concern, and desire to help, should be beaten out of them. Old fashioned values about helping people in need and reaching out to those in trouble have no place in Bush's new America.

Permission, control, and restricted movement are the new values that they must follow. There may have been a terrorist among them that may have tried to undermine our values if they were allowed just walk in and help.

I was listining to one of those FEMA streaming scanner stations the other day (mostly really muted and hard to understand yapping goin on), when I heard a crisp, clean, perfectly understandable voice come over te general noise.

"Hey, this is [identification number] down from Vancouver. We were told to contact you on this freaquency...?"
FEMA: "Stand by"
"Er, no. We're going in. No one's told us where to go, though."
FEMA: "Stand by"
"Negitive. We're going in."
No further communications.

Hehe, very typical of our lads and I was damned proud to hear it.

HOWEVER, we need to remember that this is not a compition! It's not a race to see who can earn to most points by saving the most people.
This is just about getting folks out alive.

After hearing some of the reports from the Vancouver USAR team, I am so incredibly proud of them.

The people of the parish where they were made them feel incredibly welcome. In fact, when they asked if there was somewhere they could hang the Canadian flag for the team, the firemen in LA hoisted it up right in front of the firehall.

After being greeted as heroes and seeing the Canadian flag fly above the fire hall where they had set up a command post, 46 members of the elite Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue team returned home yesterday morning.

Exhausted Canadian team returns home

I've always been proud of our troops, no more so than today. However, I don't like the title of this thread, it implies that the US troops had a choice? I wish it simply read, "Canadian troops arrive in N.O.".

They USAR team was requested by officials on the state level. I think this is why they were able to go in while others were not.
I'm glad they could help as much as they did, I just wish we could have sent more, sooner.

It is a true fact Canada is the best country in the world...The only reason the US looks good is because they spend their money on blowing up other countries they could care less about the ppl there. US doesnt have to many major issues and thats why they can usually get away with it.

Actually, the first offers of aid were turned down.
Then the team was held up trying to get across the border.
There's still teams up here ready and waiting to go (D.A.R.T.) that have denied access.

Maybe the Canadians should take over the US, and make it a better place.

I know they turned down aid at the federal level, but USAR got in right away (31st). I think that is because LA officials contacted them directly. They couldn't deploy the first day they were there because of safety concerns.

It is too bad that DART didn't make it through. They could have been a big help.

Again history proves that Canadian's can put aside all politics and just get the job done when it needs to be done.

Seriously people, my Canadian troops saw you guys bitching at each other and flew one of our pre-historic planes right past the mob of angry americans on the verg of a civil war.

I ask the American government to pull their heads out of their asses and get the job done... Just like Vimmy Ridge.

American gouvernment needs an attitude adjustment right quick. Learn to love your own like us canadian's love everyone (or you like your oil) and maybe you could get past the blaming and start to help our Canaidan troops clean up your country.

... Or you could keep bitching and just watch to pre-history planes fly overhead loaded with troops that have a leader that has a heart, not a deep pocket.

Edit - I dont mean to direct this an any ATS member. Only the US gouvernment, not like they are watching.

Has somebody been passing out the retard sandwiches again?

OF COURSE the Canadians are going to "beat the US Army / Navy / Air Force / Marines / National Guard /FEMA / State Police / Local Sherrif / Some Guy With Pickup Truck" to MANY locations. What the hell would be the point of having the Canadian search and rescue or military there AT ALL if they could only go "search" places after the American (whatevers) had been there first??

Do some of you people even think before posting? What would be the reason Canadians got to "location A" ahead of any American group? Gosh, I'd bet it would be because somebody in charge was intelligent and didn't have his or her head up their ass said: "Ok, this group of National Guard is responsible for searching area B, ok this group of Coast Guard searches area C, you Army groups are responsible for areas E, and F... and you Canadians you're searching area A" . . . etc., etc., etc.

Wow, somebody actually thought to make use of resources intelligently... imagine that!

That Canadians "beat" US forces to an area because that is the area the Canadian forces were specifically sent to search by those directing the search and rescue efforts. It would be flat out stupid to have the Canadians "search" areas already searched by US forces. Don't you think so too? Or is thinking not part of the program anymore?
