Why all the attention on New Orleans?

There were areas in MS and AL that were destroyed. I know New Orleans is flooded...but why is all the rioting and other nonsense happening in New Orleans? Is it even happening in other affected areas?

Seems like NO is getting all the FEMA and media attention. That's just my POV though.

That is true but if you have to understand that most of the attention that media has focus on is in NO, we get what they give us.

Plus the lost of lives was in great numbers in the city.

I think it was because they were the ones screaming the loudest to the media.

I think if you look at the death toll (summary) by state on this page: Wikipedia (chart almost half-way down on the right) it might become more clear. Keep in mind that NOLA's deaths have not been counted because of the floods but there have been estimates anywhere from 'thousands' to 50,000 (and I've even heard more). So, while the state of Mississippi has maybe 200-300 deaths, the city of New Orleans has perhaps 100 times that or more.

And as far as I know there was no disasterous flooding anywhere else.

I'm not saying those deaths and damage aren't important, they just don't compare to the NOLA situation and that just may be the reason you're hearing much more about NOLA than the other hurricane-hit areas.

I know Biloxi was terribly damaged. I was married and lived in Biloxi for a couple years back in the dark ages. I know the beautiful old house I lived in is completely gone.

The situation in NOLA was the most dramatic. The news media knows that drama sells. They have to keep their ratings up. BTW, I did hear of looting in MS but it was not covered as much as NOLA due to the drama. There was no voilence in MS.

Benevolent Heretic--Rioting as in looting, people shooting, martial law, that kind of thing.

It's all but peaceful over there from what I heard.

I live in Biloxi, MS, just got back to my dorm in Mobile, Al Monday. I'll tell you why i think you dont see anything about MS. Even though my hometown is almost compeltely gone, everyone is keeping calm, everyone is doing THEIR part to get the aid they need. However, in New Orleans, everyone is screaming for aid...which i understand, there surrounded by water...our water came and went, theres unfortunately is sitting there. I dont blame it on Bush, thats rediculous. Hell, almost everyone thought New Orleans was saved until the day after the hurricane when the levy broke, so they probalby had most of there resources heading to MS and AL (because there was help in Biloxi the day after), however then that damn levy broke.....

I think that it's because they got hit the hardest (when the damage is over 100 billion) and the city is almost 100% destroyed YES you tend to take the spotlight. It does not minimize the impact that Katrina has put on other places...
