Bacteria from the cut-price meat that we eat can remain in the gut for years and, warn scientists, breed superbugs untreatable in humans. So are we sitting on an antibiotic-resistant time bomb?

Even as you pick up the tray of cut-price chicken thighs, your life expectancy has plummeted. Ten years from now, as a result of this penny-pinching impulse buy, you could die - untreatable by modern medicine - in the intensive-care unit of a British hospital, the victim of a killer bug implanted in your gut and waiting for its Big Moment. It's a complex tale of poor slaughterhouse hygiene, gene transfer, microbiology and pure chance, but at its centre is the antibiotic avoparcin - a 'growth promoter' once given to chickens and pigs to help them gain weight efficiently.

Sad, but definetly true. These people dont care what the meat is made out of unless it sells.

I almost don't want to eat chicken anymore :/

They say that its mostly if when the chicken is thawing out in your fridge and drips onto something else, that is where the danger is. Thankfully, I thaw out my chicken in my sink with nothing else. Then I cook it, so I think I'm OK. But heh .. who wants to live to be 90 if I'm gonna die at 80 anyway, ya know?

Which is why we eat off the land as much as possible. Deer, a freezer full of it. Wild turkey, squirle, rabit. And the garden has no pestisides. Still - the air we breath, the water we drink the soild we grow food in --- not to mention all the polutants the animals we eat are digesting as well --- there's just not alot one can do nowdays to protect their family.

(As far as being what you eat. I use to be fast and cheap...now I'm hard to catch and on the block. LMAO!)

Eat right, excercise daily, and die anyway...

I wonder why I care so much about what I eat. Do I really want to live 80 years anyway?

I like your idea AngelaLadyS! I always wanted to try deer. Does it taste more like chicken or beef? I don't know if I would eat squirrel. I like rabbit. It's better than chicken.

Deer is more like beef, but definitely has it's own flavor... Venison, it is also called... If you've ever had rabbit (like chicken, but a little gamier), deer is similar to "gamier" beef... Ground up deer meat is awesome in meatloaf (mixed with regular ground beef)!

Exactly... I'm going to enjoy life when I can, while I'm here. I have no problem with being healthy, but I'm not going to be a fanatic. However, as a friend of mine was once a butcher, I NEVER buy price cut meat, hehe....

YO, MessedUpA......

wait til they start irradiating the stuff...

the steroids/ antibiotics etc the corps are crammin
into the animals, makes me reconsider the values
of PETA & EarthFirsters..

another factoid, that may OR may not have merit....

the OBESE & Rubinesque populations are that way,
not so much from sedintary lifestyles as from all the
'FLAP' that's put into food....how can 50mil chickens
produce 50mil tons of "white meat" for 'no-gutts' ??
**unless feet/beaks/preacher-noses all get bleached
real white, ground up, and get 'FDA ed' as white meat
from chicken???***

item 2(Dos)::: the aging population is 'QUIETLY' getting
into a serious Pandemic of GOUT...
the food packaging industries (expanded by NAFTA)
is putting lots of filler, organ materials & such, into the
pre-cooked-fast food items-WHICH takes a long-time
to show up..
(COUNT up the elder 45-70yrs you know that have
sore/tender/swollen ankles)....i bet if research is done;;
the GOUT Pandemic would be exposed, and the food
industry along with relaxed criteria by FDA are actually
poisoning us all- - -slowly but sure !!!
~~~
heard at the CEOs dinner table: 'pass the profits, please'...oops a slip of the tongue? NOOO, thats in
the burrito, senoir
VEGGIES? free range? HELP...my TUNAs, SALMONs are
heavy metaled...
maybe that Indian/Pakistani guy is right to live on air &
light....he's done it for 8 years now
and the woman's been going for 3 years now....
check out coast to coast am...unknown country.com &
You think your innards are sterile or something?,there is no such thing as "clean" everything is coated with a layer of bugs no matter what it is,as far as that "super bug" statement by the press,they're full of #,your digestive tract takes care of almost all of it.
This is just media hype.
Deer and Turkey drink polluted water runoff from farmers fields,no tellin what they eat either,no tellin what you're eating because of it.
It doesn't matter if you make sure that it is cooked well,heat breaks the enzymes and kills the microbes.I just don't get the media,if it isn't a dire warning of doom and gloom nobody wants to hear it.
Hype.
Your Guts Are Full Of The Most Vile Microbes!,and they digest the materials you can't digest and then they # out vitamins for you to absorb! YUCK!.
Don't pay attention to the media.
I wonder why they would be implanting a grain of fear into our psyche regarding foods,hmmmm,???.
LOL! I love that!
I tried Venison a few times and I find it too gamey :/ Maybe it's just a matter of changing your pallet. I used to hate skim milk too, now I cant drink even 1%.
Well, generaly it taist like deer. LOL. But the way we butcher it and the way I cook it you wouldn't know it wasn't beef if I didn't tell you. (accept there's no fat - I'm talking spray the nonstick skillet before frying a burger or it'll stick - NO fat.
............You have to find a good butcher - it has to be butcherd correctly or it won't be very good. We do it ourselves and I don't even marinade before cooking. I use it just like I do beef. I won't touch beef now - way to much fat.
I do the skim milk too. I was starving the other day and wanted a bowl of wheaties...none of my skim left so I put my son's 2% on it. OMGosh...I went hungry. That stuff tasted like cream. Nasty.
