For every horrific, devasting and heartbreaking story, I wish there was a positive one to balance things out. Sadly, that's not the way things tend to go. In situations such as this one, the bad will almost always overwhelm the good.

In the spirit of hope, I invite ATSers to generously donate and post any good, positive, uplifting stories they have from Hurricane Katrina.

I'll start with a few posted on this board. This one is from FredT's thread:

He Held their Lives in his Tiny Hands

In the chaos that was Causeway Boulevard, this group of refugees stood out: a 6-year-old boy walking down the road, holding a 5-month-old, surrounded by five toddlers who followed him around as if he were their leader.

They were holding hands. Three of the children were about 2 years old, and one was wearing only diapers. A 3-year-old girl, who wore colorful barrettes on the ends of her braids, had her 14-month-old brother in tow. The 6-year-old spoke for all of them, and he told rescuers his name was Deamonte Love.

Richard Austin: I was never thinking about myself... we had to help those folks.

...Mr Austin and his shipmates, Louis Lazard, 27, and Jerry Bastion, 18, know this: in those two days before outside help arrived, they plucked more than 100 people from the water and ferried them to higher ground. "They were clinging to whatever they could cling to," Mr Austin says, "roofs and balconies, anything".

Actor, pilot John Travolta delivers food, vaccines to Katrina victims

METAIRIE, United States (AFP) - Actor John Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, flew in their own private jet to deliver five tons of food for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Travolta, an experienced pilot, flew the supplies to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, then toured the flooded city of New Orleans and visited rescue workers and shelters for evacuees. The two movie stars also brought along 400 doses of tetanus vaccines for rescuers.
