I was watching "Shootout: Battle of Baghdad" and early in the show, they showed video of american mortars. what is it, and could you give pictures
to back it up?
Seems the US is finally going to bring into service a 120mm mortar to replace the old 4.2 inch ( 107mm ) Chemical Mortars. This is mainly because the
4.2 inchers have rifled barrels and they are so old now the rifling has gone.
Seems the Russians know the value of heavy mortars as they've been using them since WWII.
The daddy though has to be the 160mm tubes.
Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit find two 160 mm mortar tubes while patrolling outside Forward Operating Base Iskandariyah, Iraq,
Sept. 26. During the patrol, the Marines from Bravo Company, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, discovered a weapons cache. The 24th
MEU is currently conducting security and stability operations in Northern Babil Province
well there is no overkill in mortars.. it's more a questionof it being unpractical to handle and more logistically demanding. The bigger the calibre
the easier it is to make more different kinds of ammo for it. Seeker warheads like the
STRIX tend to need larger calibres.
Imagine any future victim of US oil, I mean liberating operations getting their hands on some of these babies.. Range of 7000m and all you need to do
is to hit within 150m of a tank for the self guiding warhead to lock on and destroy even moving vehicles..
