Ibragim Malsagov, the Prime Minister of the Russian caucasian republic of Ingushetia survived an explosion intended to kill him earlier today. He is
reported to be stable, despite a wound to his thigh. two bodyguards were killed and a number of others were injured by the blast.
Ingushetia has been embroiled in the successionist strife of neighbouring Chechnya, being home to many ethnic Chechens (and closely kinned tribal
groups) and having a strategic value to those Chechen fighters who fled the onslaught of the second (contemporary) major Russian campaign against
separatists at the turn of the 21st century. Attempts to drag the Ingush into the struggle against Russia have largely failed in the past as the
ruling elites of the republic remian client powers for the centralised authorities in Moscow, coulpled with a recognition of the need to maintain what
economic and strategic links remain with the rest of the RF (many of the Caucasian republics are still heavily dependant on federal money) and a
desire for Nazran (the capital) not to end up like Grozney.
Despite the loyalty of the republic's ruling class, Chechen backed insurgency remains a big problem for the maintainance of law and order in the
republic and it's neighbouring states.
