help! my computer shuts down very slowly...

my dell 4600 shuts down very slowly...

when i tell it to shut down, it just stays on the desktop and doesn't turn off...

i have windows xp...

any ideas???

Hello TSA,

I would check my computer event viewer log to see if it lists the problem. Look for the ones in red or yellow. If you dont understand the codes, you can look the event ID up on google.

I would also reccomend checking the article here at the SHUTDOWN WORKS, BUT IT’S REAL SLOW paragraph.

Or look thru the links here for other articles.


After that you can read this Microsoft article about how to restore your performance on xp, just for some fun homework.

The event ID is listed just below the category. What is the event ID #, and what does the text in the box say?

The category is not as important as the ID number. Google the event ID number, like this:

or you could look it up on eventid.net

Ok,
First I would find my Operating System CD, and put it in and go.....

start -->
Run-->
Type: SFC /scannow follow the prompts.


If that does not fix it, then the next step would be following this how to clean up a damaged COM+ catalog (it is not a complicated as they make it sound).

i did that just now and a scan started...

it just finished and thats it right???

is there anything else that i need to do???

that cleaning a COM link is for windows 2000, should i try it anyway???

Na, no need to try it unless you still have the same issue after reboot.

Dont forget to take your cd out of the tray before reboot.

No, dont start at step 10.

Step 10 is additional to the previous steps, if you have xp.
