A new deal signed by the US and Irish governments gives the US govt unprecedented power and sovereignity over the people of an independent country.
Under this agreement, the US will be able to literally 'pick up' any Irish citizen in Ireland and question them without having to go through due
legal process that Irish citizens have enjoyed without exception in the past.

Treaty gives CIA powers over Irish citizens
By Dan Buckley
US INVESTIGATORS, including CIA agents, will be allowed interrogate Irish citizens on Irish soil in total secrecy, under an agreement signed between
Ireland and the US last week.
Suspects will also have to give testimony and allow property to be searched and seized even if what the suspect is accused of is not a crime in
Ireland.
Under 'instruments of agreement' signed last week by Justice Minister Michael McDowell, Ireland and the US pledged mutual co-operation in the
investigation of criminal activity. It is primarily designed to assist America's so-called 'war on terror' in the wake of the September 11 atrocities.

This development is absolutely appalling. American citizens may have given up their right to freedom under Homeland Security and the Patriot Act. But
to subject unwillingly the citizens of a foreign nation to the same breahces of human rights is an abuse of power, both by the American and Irish
governments.
Irish citizens have in the past enjoyed great freedom, even more than US citizens have enjoyed. But giving a foreign power the right to operate in
your country is a breach of sovereignty, even more so that Ireland is a friend of the USA.
The Irish government has laid claim that this 'update' of current treaties has been discussed in the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament), yet no word of it
came to the public's eye until after the treaty was signed.
It will be interesting to see the public backlash in the country to this. Irish citizens generally do not bend over willingly when pushed and have a
long history of fighting oppression.
