Writing dates.

Why do American (and others countries) write dates going Month, day, year (i.e. 12/29/98). That makes no sense. Why would you write going mediem, small, big?

It surly makes much more sense to write day, month, year (small, medium, big) like we do in the UK. It’s the way our number system works (smallest to biggest) so why do residents of the USA write dates like this (i am looking for an answer).
