Mysterious ship detained at Detroit

Last night while watch Local 4 Detroit, this breaking news came across. Couldn't find a link then. Local 4 reported that the RCMP were swarming all over the ship. Apparently the ship refused to identify itself. Could be a smuggling entry point or something equally sinister.

The U.S. coast guard has escorted a freighter to the Detroit Marine Terminal after becoming suspicious when it failed to report its progress to Canadian coast guard officials at Sarnia Thursday night.

Authorities decided to investigate the freighter's status after it laid anchor Thursday night in Canadian waters in the Detroit River near LaSalle, Ont.

The RCMP has also been investigating and has scheduled a news conference in Windsor, Ont., for late Friday morning.

This maybe a harmless ship or not. Terrorists don't need planes to do their terrible deeds. Airports are more secure than any coast line. But then again I am sounding paranoid.

I'm glad they are doing something to crack down on the coastlines. I am from Michigan and pretty much grew up on a boat. We would go to Canada and all we had to do was make a phone call "hi, I am X and I am here with my family and our boat"

I always thought if you wanted to carry something across borders all you had to do was get a house boat. Do you have any idea how much you could hide in a 38' criscraft?

One time (out of thousands) they came to "search" our boat as a random thing. The man got there, asked if we had anything illegal, basically stood in the living room and turned in a circle then shook dad's hand and left.

The article states the Antiguan-registered coal carrier named Jana.

Not sure of any specific relevance, but I Googled "Antigua Jana" and the results were rather interesting.

Agents -- including the U.S. Coast Guard, Immigrations Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol -- boarded the ship when it reached the Nicholson dock in Detroit at about 8:30 a.m., according to Local 4. Nothing unusual was found during the search, the station reported.

The ship was scheduled to unload steel coils at the Detroit terminal Friday. The crew will continue to unload the shipment -- which is estimated to take about 10 hours -- and then will be free to leave, according to Local 4.

This is very risky, especially in todays world where everyone is on edge. I am interested to hear why the ship did not respond to communication attemtps. After all, if they have nothing to hide, why not respond?

Yeah was hearing about this on the news this afternoon. They found nothing and said the ship would be on it's way to lake michigan tommrow.
