Downtown streets were closed off due to a suspicious package found near the Federal Reserve building. Street car service was shut down. A bus was even placed sideways across a street as if they were trying to use it to block the effects of an explosion.

Today, there is nothing in the local broadcast, internet, or print media about this incident. The authorities appear to be trying to make the whole thing go away for some reason like to protect tourism(?).

Very strange.

Wow. That is very strange. How did you hear about it? I can't find anything on the Internet.

I was there.

First, looking down on the activity from the 20th floor of my building and then walking past the blocked off streets on the way to my car.

I can't find anything on the internet, TV, radio or local newspaper either.

We have been having alot of those suspicious packages here in Austin Tx lately,,,,,Started with a man that found a package in his yard and didnt want to let go of it because he was scared it would go off. Bomb Squad came and blocked off a neigborhood in S Austin. Turns out the man was some kinda big gov guy here.

Hyatt Regency on Town Lake,,,some guy left his back pack in the lobby and when confronted by hotel staff he ran off.....area was sealed off and the Bomb crew came in,,,turned out to be benign.

Just a few days ago a suspicious bucket of white powder was left by the Gov Mansion and a threat towards Gov Perry by some prison inmate....turned out to be nothing but the letter was traced back to the tx inmate and is facing Federal charges.

Lets all get real scared and cry for Homeland Security to protect us with microchips and cameras

I too live in the East Bay. and didn't hear a word about this on the news. . Considering it was really nothing, just a few suspicious pipes on fire at the bottom of a garbage can, I wonder why? Doesn't the media usually like to invoke the public's fear? Maybe because it happened in the middle of the business district, in the middle of the day, "business as usual" was deemed more important then causing a panic.

Once again, thank you San Jose Mercury News.

Unfortunately pranksters leaving "suspicious packages" and blowing things up are a trend even in more civilized parts of the world than the mainland US.
