Cnn or BBc have yet to post it but neverthe less the tremor was also exprienced n the eartern coast of India.Possible tsunami.

Tsunami warning issued for Indian Ocean

tsunami warning has been issued for the Indian Ocean, sparked by an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 located in the Nicobar Islands, India, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Sunday.

"There is a possibility of a destructive local tsunami in the Indian Ocean," the agency said in a written statement about the earthquake, which struck at 12:02 p.m. ET.

In an hour or less, a tsunami could hit all coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India and, in Indonesia, the Indian Ocean coast and Malacca coast of Sumatra.

I doubt anything would come of this, but I suppose it could be indicative of a bigger one coming along, yesterday was packed with 4.5 and over quakes.

Problem is, I think this tsunami happened before that Mag-7-something quake...

The warning has been lifted. Good news for the people living in that area.

Interesting point Helmutt, can you confirm that suspicion?

That would make me think one of two things. Either a sea-floor shift preceeding the earthquake proper, perhaps even leading to the earthquake, or..

Underground cavern collapse? Perhaps magma chamber instability?

I'm not sure..what do you think could account for a tsunami ahead of an earthquake?

Actually after inspecting that article some more, I now noticed they say it was NOT a tsunami but a tidal wave caused by the full moon and "strong winds"...

"It was not a tsunami," he said. "It was triggered by full moon tides and strong winds."

I remember when hurricane Ivan (or one of the other hurricanes at that time) went over Cayman Islands there was a Mag 6 there at the same time. There was also other earthquakes other places where there was also hurricanes or Typhoons. There was some speculation what could have caused these quakes. I suspect when the oceanlevel rises because of storms (or full moon) it might trigger earthquakes, if there is instability already.

This fad of 'tsunami warning' will be gone in 10 months.
