Cuba When Castro Dies?

Yes, I've been there. I was born there. I have loved ones who are still there. I dont think this necessarily makes me an expert but i know the politics there well.
When you travel to Cuba you are lining Castros pockets.

Nobody benefits but Castro.

Yes...unfortunately Cuba is what you want to see it as. Since my father is from Cuba and I am a born American in NJ, I share both feelings. I know that Castro runs his country through his military. The whole country is basically a jail (bars and everything). Those that are favored in the country is those who are loyalist and militiary personnel to Castro. All citizens are not well cared for unless they have something Castro wants. In that case, he just takes it. I think Russia and Cuba are still in secret relations that the US does not know about.

As for an earlier post about the US not being "allowed" to invade Cuba, I assume you're referring to the deal brokered to end the Cuban Missile Crisis. Basically, we agreed to remove our nukes from Turkey and to not invade Cuba in exchange for the USSR removing its nukes from Cuba.

I find it rather disturbing how people are talking about changing a sovereign nation into a "vacation spot" like it was before... If thats the best we can offer Cuba as Americans then they were right to kick us out.

I totally agree with that Boogyman, I don't want it to go back to how it was. Cuba needs to change on its own terms without the influence of the US.

Secret relations as allies and still agree on some standards. Hey...face it, Cuba is more fond of Russia than the US. Funny how Castro said it was wrong to blow up the World Trade Center though.

I ask again Dgtempe, have you ever been there? I think you have to experience something yourself before you judge it. I'm not saying Castro is good, I'm just saying Americanizing the country would not be good.

Hey if Cuba is Americanized they'll at least be able to start getting some car parts! Plus, once we introduce them to power steering and ABS they'll think they just stepped into a time warp!

Some Cubans don't enjoy there country very much. I myself have parents who are Cuban, and came to America first chance they received. If relations to become more friendly, I can only hope for America to get more involved.

I currently live in Miami (big shock there) and have read more than enough times in the paper: "# Cubans travelled on a (car reconstructed to float, barrel, raft, etc)
and managed to make it on US ground OR and were sent back to Cuba by US coast guard and officials. "

I once caught a web site that was a photo journal of Cuba. I was very impressed with the architecture of the old buildings. As old and run down as they are, I'd love to see them one day. Forgive my ignorance, but is it Cuba that keeps Americans out, or America that keeps Americans out. If Cuba allowed my visit, I would go. Maybe someone could educate me on the current policies.

Umm of coarse they agree on some standards, during the Cold War they were allies, it would make sense that they still are despite the fact that the Russians are currently no longer communist. Castro has good reason to trust the Russians more than the US anyways after what they had done to his country and i dont see how you think that just because Castro doesnt prefer America over Russia that it means he wants it destroyed, and its certainly not funny.

It's America. Blocking entry towards americans has nothing to do with Fidel.

Fidel would like nothing more than to take your vacation money and put it in his pocket. Do you want to feed dictators?

I hope Castro croaks soon and Cuba would be free of his dictatorial influences and his party's total controls of Cuba. Cuba doesn't deserve someone like Castro and his party and should have a new leadership directly elected by the people of Cuba for the good of its future. More than 40 years of dictatorial control of the island is enough.

My only concerns are that the Cubans would endure painful socio-economic changes and political manipulations by outside forces (the US, Venezuela, Russia, China and the EU) after the tyrant pass on. Nevertheless, free Cuba from Castro and his cronies in power.

I'd rather Cuba become more like one of their friends, like Canada instead of the US. Cuba, the new Canadian Privince :-)

An aquaintence of mine has just visted Cuba and he came across info that the US army pay to have a base at Guantanamo Bay and Castro has NEVER cashed any of the cheques given.
This, it was said, happened because Castro will not recognise that any Americans military on Cuban soil!
