update:

'SUSPECT HELD IN EGYPT'

A man who allegedly made the bombs used in the London attacks has reportedly been detained in Egypt.

American television company ABC said the man, believed to have had a central role in making the explosive devices, had been held near Cairo and was being questioned.

'Good Morning America' said authorities believed the man had left Britain two weeks before the London explosions on July 7.

ABC is the network that is reporting the arrested. Skynews are waiting to confirm it

The ticker on the BBC news website says that *sources have confirmed this*

According to this BBC report a flat of an Egyptian Chemistry student is being searched in Leeds.

Looks more and more like a massive failure of the intelligence services.

Is this the guy that may have studied in North Carolina:

edition.cnn.com...

This could be a link to 9/11, I think some of the 9/11 terrorists were at that university at the same time this guy was.

This group is believed to have worked under the radar, so to speak, not even GCHQ and NSA picked this up. CIA have checked their intelligence and had nothing on this. No one knew of this, which is alarming.

This is what I've read in (hebrew) newspapers :

The 33-year-old Egypt-born is named Magdy el-Nashar.
He was doing a PhD bio-chemistry course (and also worked as a teacher there) at the University of Leeds in northern England *).
He had rented a flat at 18 Alexandra Grove, Burley, Leeds .
His telephone number was found on Hasib Hussain's (one of the bombers) mobile.
He is thought to have handed over his flat to the gang - possibly to the 'fifth man' - before vanishing days before the bombings.

edit:

*) You can find such a name on the namelist of the University of Leads ( - but only in google cache , maybe it has been deleted from the official lists)

Infinite - It is alarming that there are would be bombers/killers running around loose in the world that we don't know anything about, but then how could anyone know before people such as these have done anything wrong?

Was it last night or the night before where the BBC interviewed a *friend* of one of three bombers in Leeds and he said that it 'was' known (in the community at least) that this man was going to Pakistan and Afghanistan on a regular basis and that when the man talked in private, the politics was that of Radical Islam (although not in public). As soon as he realised that the man was a suspect - he reported these things to the police, and of course said he had nio idea the man would take it as far as he did. I can't believe that the families of these individuals didn't notice anything suspicious...

i dont believe that at all,
how can a family not notice anything odd when their 18 year son was travelling to Pakistan and Afghanistan? heck, he might of been younger if he was travelling a year or two ago.

Part of the rationale behind drafting the Patriot Act was to discover & detain individuals like the London bombers, as well as discover any sources of their funding, etc. The primary problem is that there are way to many people in the world to monitor, on anything like a close enough basis, to discover any planned wrongdoing before hand. And you'de be a fool not to think that a lot of racial profiling goes on in deciding who to monitor and when.

Sky news just reported that the bombs were "chemical based" home-made bombs of "acetone peroxide" - same as the ones found in the flat in Leeds rented by the guy in Egypt to the 4th bomber.

The investigation seems to be progressing very quickly.

The Boston Globe reports, Tanweer went to Lahore, Pakistan, this year to study the Islamic religion“.

LT has not only access to munitions and safe houses and has has also been linked with Hamas and Jemaah Islamiyyah, but it also has close ties with al-Qaeda.

(A Palestinian, Zayn al-Abidin Muhammed Husayn Abu Zubaydah - a senior al-Qaeda lieutenant - was seized in an LT safe house in Faisalabad in March 2002).
