NEWS: Time Magazine to Hand Over Reporter Notes In CIA Case

Coming on the heel of the U.S. Supreme Court rejection of an appeal, Time, Inc. has indicated that it will turn over the notes from one of its reporters. Yesterday the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal by two reporters who are threatened with contempt for refusing to divulge their sources. Despite its concerns in the matter, Time will turn over the notes to a special investigator looking into the leak of a CIA officers name.




I have mixed feeling about this. Our society is based on personal freedom and a free press is a cornerstone of this. This type of threat is exactly what I would expect from now on if a reporter releases information that one political party or another dislikes. On the other hand, many of the press feel that they can do whatever they want whenever they want and hide behind the Bill of Rights as a convience.

Free Press as with Free Speech, as with other freedoms, come(s) with accountability and responsibility, and that is also a "cornerstone" within our society.

The US major media should and needs to be held accountable, just as many of you claim that corporations, politicians, and world leaders should. The Big Media is no different.

What free press??? I don't think that exists anymore. How sad! If reporters start getting arrested, if China buys Unocal, ???? maybe the John Titor story is real?

by the wording of your opinion, it seems you DON'T feel corporations, politicians, and world leaders should be held accountable.
i can totally agree that big MEDia is no different. infact, it is indistinguishable from the above list, which is actually one monolithic corporation. let's call it 'the beast' for easy reference.
the thing is, they aren't really attacking big media here, so much as the little reporter with a REAL investigation in his press cap.
CIA and judges can be criminal, too, and in fact, i have been reading more and more reports of questionable rulings and blatant disregard for protocols. if you go to fromthewilderness.com, you will read reports of tons of illegal CIA activity, including allegations that the CIA runs the drug trade in america. whose better equipped for it, really?
it is the press we have historically trusted to be a watchdog on this type of thing. this is why the press is protected from having to disclose their sources.

Mathew cooper is breathing easier today--too bad Judith Miller can't do the same, and I can't say I'd be sorry to see her go to jail after all the Chalabi boosting she did for the neo-cons leading up to the Iraqi invasion.

But what I'd really like to know is, what's goin-on with Bob Novak. He's the treasonous bast--- that printed the story. I think were going to find-ut that he already outed the person that leaked the story--othewise he'd be facing jail-time, too.

Yes and no. Its interesting to see the side unfold here. Clearly a NeoCon or like leaked the information. I have heard from alot of people in the "Non" neo camp that they should have turned this information over. So if it damages an administration you do not like is it okay??

Would the same objections be raised if it were say Hillary's administration here?

They're saying Karl Rove may have been the source of the leak so this could get very interesting.

Reporters have been arrested before for not giving out sources. It's about time that the media is held accountable. I've seen stories printed that came from what were supposed to be classified documents, but nothing was done about it. It said "unnamed sources" and nobody was ever forced to turn them over, or anything done about it.

not really, though. i just happen to know the power of precedent.
if this is upheld, then whistleblowers will no longer feel like they will protected by law after blowing the whistle.
'telling' will be like painting a target on your forehead.
it's a double-edged sword. i would love nothing more than to see the treasonists exposed, but time OUGHT to take care of that. i'm sure that if the press can reGAIN it's freedom, AND the RIGHT to keep sources anonymous, then justice will stay the course.

there is a parable from canada. the recent release of karla, the psycho girlfriend of paul bernardo. because of a plea bargain worked out to convict bernardo, karla is immune from further persecution. and now, she is being released, only twelve yrs. after her imprisonment. (google it, it's off topic) a potentially dangerous sex murderess on the loose legally.

it's an example of how 'justice' can get MUGGED by red tape.

when there is no guarantee of anonymity, only CRIMINALS will have anonymity.

true. but it is their right.

until they get caught, that is. then they will have very few rights.

i hope the freedom of the press is not smacked down, here. that would be very bad.
