A scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey denied tampering with documents about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste site in testimony before Congress on wednesday. A controversy has brewed over a series of e-mails that some believe show scientists changed data to get desired results. One e-mail stated: "In the end I keep track of two sets of files, the ones that will keep QA happy and the ones that were actually used." QA meaning quality assurance. Joseph Hevesi a U.S.G.S. Hydrologist is at the center of the controversy and appeared before the commitee under subpoena.

"I have never falsified any documents related to Yucca Mountain or any other project," Joseph Hevesi, a United States Geological Survey hydrologist in Sacramento, told a House Government Reform subcommittee.

The panel is investigating e-mails written by Hevesi and other scientists that, according to critics, seem to suggest they changed work to reach a predetermined conclusion. The existence of the e-mails, written between 1998 and 2000, was made public by the Energy Department in March.

The Yucca Mountain nuclear waste disposal project has been a source of controversy since it's beginnings. Residents of Nevada are concerned about having the reported 77,000 tons of radioactive waste moved to thier state while residents of other states worry about the hazards of trucking and rail shipping the waste across the country. The potential falsification of documents can only deepen the Yucca Mountain controversy.
