The patriots

I was playing the video game mgs2, which i am a big fan of the series and there was a group called the patriots who controlled the contry. they decide who becomes president and make it look like a drama, they control military, politics and financis. could a group like this be real? do you actually belive that the public enfluences the government? no. they make cover ups of what they do to satisfy the people. please discuss this.
