What is the price of fuel at the pumps where you live?

Perhaps we could create a little database within this thread of worldwide prices.

It would be interesting to know what everyone is paying around the world and how much it changes.

CBC has an excellent set of pages about how gas prices are set.

It all makes matters worse when consumers look south of the border. Ask just about anyone on the street, and they'll tell you that we pay more for gas than Americans do. And they want to know why.

But Imperial Oil says Canadians have it wrong.

Frank Pickard says it's "absolutely not" true that Canadians pay more for gas than their southern counterparts. "The tax structure in Canada and the US is very different. So when Canadians go down to Florida for the summer they see much lower prices and they presume that that's got something to do with the oil industry. Absolutely not."

He says taxes are the key to the price difference.

Marketplace surveyed 10 cities in Canada and 10 cities in the United States. We converted all prices to Canadian cents per litre. Here's what we found:

* The lowest price at the pump in the US was 29.9 cents a litre in Atlanta.
* The lowest price at the pump in Canada was 56.9 cents a litre in Calgary - 27 cents higher.

But remember, according to Pickard and the oil companies, taxes are the key, so let's take taxes out.

Minus the tax there is still a big difference:

* The lowest price in the United States, taxes out, was 18.4 cents per litre, again in Atlanta.
* The lowest price in Canada, taxes out, was 30.3 cents a litre in Ottawa.

Here is the survey data.

Again, our comparisons are with taxes taken out, in Canadian cents per litre.

In our survey, Marketplace found that in seven of the 10 U.S. cities, you could get gas cheaper than in any of the Canadian cities.

We also saw a much wider spread between the highest price and the lowest price available: In Canada, nine of the 10 cities had a price spread of less than four cents a litre, with as little as 0.9 cents a litre.

In the U.S., seven of the 10 cities had a spread of more than 10 cents a litre, up to as much as 20.9 cents.

In Ontario, for instance, Imperial Oil, Petro-Canada and Sunoco control 85 percent of the refining market.

In Quebec, Ultramar, Petro-Canada and Shell control all of it.

But in a competitive market like Texas the picture is quite different: Exxon, Amoco and Mobil control only 29 per cent of refining.

This is an excellent set of pages, especially for Canadians.

3$ a Gallon?

Gasoline prices, reversing a two-month slide, are again approaching records and at least one expert thinks they could hit $3 a gallon soon in the United States.

"We'll see it within a year," T. Boone Pickens, head of the billion-dollar hedge fund BP Capital Management, said on CNN's "In The Money" over the weekend.

Pickens noted the discrepancy between $2 a gallon gas in the US and $5 a gallon gas in Europe. "The energy situation is global," he said. "I know there are taxes involved in the pricing...but eventually it's going to have to move up."

Gasoline prices mounted a renewed surge last month, with regular self serve rising 8 cents to average $2.21 a gallon, according to a survey released Sunday. That's just 7 cents below the all-time high set April 8.

This is a cool website for finding the price at the pumps across Canada.

You can submit current prices as well.

It's free where I live, I just fill up and drive off, usually there is a pissed cashier chasing me thru the parking lot though.

No seriously though I live in Florida, it's around $2.19 a gallon today.

As for comparing gas prices between here and Europe, I'd rather take the US price any day. But give me a shot at paying the price they pay in the middle east, it averages out to less than 30 cents US a gallon.

Sorry, forgot to link to some info in the last post. The war in Iraq, if it was for oil then the only people who got the cheap price were the Iraqi's!!!!!!!

www.showmenews.com...

Filling a 22-gallon tank in Baghdad with low-grade fuel costs just $1.10, plus a 50-cent tip for the attendant. A tankful of high-test costs $2.75.

In Britain, by contrast, gasoline prices hit $5.79 per gallon last week - $127 for a tankful.

I'm not gonna go into the whole "war for oil" debate but come on.......... gas goes thru the roof here and drops thru the floor there. Somethings messed up in the Bush/Blair invaded Iraq to keep gas cheap argument.

Yes, we'll have a side order of whine with our petrol
I know the prices have been nuts in Europe for years now. I remember more than 10 years ago in Portugal the price being 100 escudos, roughly $1 per litre.

Needless to say they don't drive gas guzzlers there...

whoever said that when they raised prices to over $3.00 and then lowered them to $2 something and then we would feel releived was right. I paid $2.33 today in Colorado. But let me tell ya that in Maui it's over $4.00 and when it dips down to $3.80's we feel grateful and they don't even get their oil from the middle east.

I paid $2.45 in Los Angeles. I heard that there is a station that has gas for $2.25 in Pomona, CA. The local news station reports where the gas deals are. They actually mentioned one station with $2.38, which is not really that low. I would use more gas going to the lower priced stations than I would save filling up at the corner for 10 cents more.

There are stations in Los Angeles that are at $2.55 to 2.65 too. I really want a hybrid car.

One thing to look at is how much you are paying in taxes, in California taxes are really high.

Some states have lower octanes available too, regular in CA is 87 octane, but I have seen 85 for sale in other states.

I would be interested to know how much of the price in the UK or Europe is taxes, and how much is the price of the fuel.

Paying about $2.35 in Washington, DC, but if you head out to the surrounding areas, you can get a gallon for about $2.22, give or take a few cents. But there is one gas station that only takes cash and you can get a gallon there for $2.12.

Actually paid 1.99 a week ago here on the NC/SC borderline......

.....right now its around 2.06 to 2.14 depending where you fill up........

....surprized how competitively priced it is in the Carolinas.....

......especially just south of Charlotte in South Carolina...........

I guess taxes are everything in the final tally..........

As far as i'm aware petrol would cost about 26p a litre in the UK if tax was taken off... tax at the moment is about 60p per litre.

Which is about $4.04 of TAX out of the $5.83 per Gallon if converted into dollars! ( now you see how lucky you guys are )

The total tax rate in the UK on petrol is around 224%

Around 2.19 for mid grade Southwestern Virginia. Pretty much steadily above $2.00 a gallon.

I hope to be free of oil burning vehicles in the future.

Here in sask gas prices were at 96.9 cents a litre. ($0.96 * 4 = $3.84 a gallon) It has gone down slightly since oil prices went down and it is now 91.9 cents. Canada still pays much more for gas then the US.

I don't care that much as most of the time I use public transportation, my bike, or my 2 feet. These obscene gas prices are just a ploy for all the major US oil companies to make more and more money.

Halliburton anyone????
