A report issued today claims that America could face up to 500,000 deaths from a moderately severe flu pandemic. Including up to 2 million with serious complications. However, the report states that America only has 965,256 staffed hospital beds. The report concludes that America is not capable of coping with a flu pandemic that experts believe to be a matter of "when" not "if". A flu pandemic usually occurs every 27 years and the last one was 1968, we are 10 years overdue.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Half a million Americans could die and more than 2 million could end up in the hospital with serious complications if an even moderately severe strain of a pandemic flu hits, a report predicted on Friday.

But the United States only has 965,256 staffed hospital beds, said the report from the Trust for America's Health.

The non-profit group's state-by-state analysis adds to a growing clamor of voices contending that the United States is not prepared for a large outbreak of disease, whether natural or brought on by war or terrorism.

Scary report. Could the American economy cope with over 2.5 million casualties? The social impact of half a million deaths are incomprehensible in todays society.

I think the fact that its a scientific certainty that we are going to experience a pandemic and soon is horrifying.

this just a Pygmalion effect. Just because it did not happened yet, does not mean it should happen...

But it would happened if a large enough population think so...

They did have an alert though that another confirmed case of mad cow has been made in the U.S.

The forthcoming Pandemic is going to happen.
Given the ease with which it is possible to travel globally these days, an infected person could be on the plane feeling fine and unaware they are even a modern Typhoid Mary/Mike.
It is truly scary.

Here in the UK, we are the most overpopulated country in Europe.
And it is perfectly acceptable for people infected with TB and similar to walk around coughing all over everyone.

Once the inevitable happens, our health service will collapse in days.
