Laughable EU propaganda

Just wondered if any of you have seen this:

I did a search and it looks like it's not been mentioned before. What are your thoughts?

Myself, i am a little uncomfortable some of the baddies wear bowler hats (associated with the Brits, specifically the English), but at least he has the good sense to use the 'Eurocorde'!

It just looks like a Cartoon character to help children understand what is going on within the European Union? Children over in the U.K. tend to have News-programs which help explain events that are happening within the World, be it War to natural disasters. Cartoon characters, etc, help their understanding of such events and is a good thing.

I see no major difference between Captain America, Britain and this...

It's so sad it's funny. Any kid brought up on power rangers wouldn't give the captain the time of day.

Captain Euro, the Euro mascot, is being used by television networks in programmes relating to the Euro currency (BBC and BBC World, RTL Germany, REUTERS Worldwide, CNBC Europe, KNET Belgium, FUJI TV Japan, CNN, Channel 4, and more...). Captain Euro is establishing itself as the super-hero mascot of Europe.

It's really odd that the Euro team looks American (to me) and the bad guys all look European.



Ah, I see. The good guys all have these bios that make them from nowhere. It's just an anti-nationalism thing I guess. A world traveling gymnast, the son of a travelling professor, etc. I guess being from nowhere and everywhere is like being American. Maybe why I thought that.

Not sure about being from nowhere. The top half of Captain Euro's uniform looks suspiciously like the 'warm weather' uniform of the french Gendarme, the hat is almost identical.

Whereas, DR. D Vider's son wears "Only the finest taylored suits from Saville Row, London."

I'm sure that is just a coincidence though. ............isn't it?

You cannot be serious.

Just out of interest, given that the EU exists, has publicly stated aims and is significant to the world and this part of the world just how would you educate young children about it?

(.......and avoid the "propaganda" tag.)

Sminkey, you come across as a pro EU person. So am I. My reasons for calling this out as propaganda and 'deeply dissecting' it come from my belief that this type of thing is not very helpful for the EU right now.

You ask me not to use the P-word; why? Do you think Eurosceptics would see it as anything else? However good the intentions of the creative minds assembled to write this, they have produced something that will widely be seen as EU propaganda.

The reasons why it would be viewed as such relate to your own question on how else we should educate children about the EU:

I don't recall any cartoon programmes being commissioned to 'educate' me about aspects of our national government or changes in world order. A search of the web to supplement my own hazy recollection could only yield 'Captain Planet' as the possible exception.*

I doubt other European schoolchildren had dissimilar experiences, so why are we starting now? Is there something 'different' about the EU that means we have to start producing this stuff? And if we claim there is something 'different' about the EU, doesn't that play into the hands of the Eurosceptics also?

So, my opinion is that Captain Euro is not a clever idea at the moment. You seem intelligent enough to have formed your own opinion on the good captain, thanks for listening to mine.


*Captain Planet is pretty much universally panned by those who grew up with him. I fear our other Captain is headed the same way, much to the detriment of the good intentions that created him:
