Formed in 1974 in Northern Ireland to counter republican terrorists, the men in this ultra secret unit are trained in a host of unconventional tasks such as lock picking, and array of weapons, covert surveillance and infra-red photography.Does anyone have any info on these guys ive done a google but there is hardly any info available. They are also know as the "Troop" or "section 14"

It appears they are no longer called the "14 Intelligence Company" as this article refers to them as "former."

There is also the commitment to provide a troop for duty in Northern Ireland, as part of the Intelligence & Security Group, which also includes the former 14 Intelligence Company, now apparently known as the Army Surveillance Unit.

By the mid-l980s, SAS soldiers were serving for a period of one year in Ulster Troop and were working closely within the Group with the .14th Intelligence Unit. The latter is a covert British Army intelligence-gathering organisation that was formed in the early 1970s and whose recruits are trained by the SAS. In the Group the SAS contingent and 14th Intelligence Unit were commanded by a single officer. In addition, the actions of the Group and of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) special units were also integrated.

This is all I could find so far.

It is a SAS troop.. They have in every squad these "experts" specialicing in auto-theft, lock picking.. you name it.. as i told you at my special force topic until it was deletet.. that SAS in North Ireland is using covert ops / plain clothes..

One another thing.. "Troop 14" aint a separate unit.. it is a SAS Troop as all SAS dechaments are called as Troops..

Its all OPSEC.

I don't know anything about them, but if I did, I wouldn't be posting it on the net.

There was also the FRU (Forward Reconnaissance Unit) they lost 2 trooper at an IRA funeral (they were spotted by the IRA and dragged out of their vehicle - they were armed but chose not to fire at the attacker, there was also a chopper with sniper and soldiers circling but they were order not to go in - they were driven off tortured then executed.

A couple of year later a firend was secconded to the Queen's Flight (his was an engineer specialist - fixing royal baggaage train in ful dress uniform and white glove! As a result he missed his unit's tour of NI - he thought luckly - when he got back to his unit they said he had to an NI tour, as his unit was not going back he got secconded to FRU. When ever he cam home on leave he was an abolsolute nervous wreck - apparently they spent the days driving around provo areas in unmarked cars - souped up that were change colour regularly and number plate about every week.

The FRU dealt mainly with the locals and were experts at turning the locals (hence their motto "Fishers of Men") , they were basically information gatherers and coordinaters for S.A.S and DET operations. They did use British service personel although generally Irishmen where possible.

The type of close obsevations were reduced after a particular incident where i believe 3 operaters were killed when their laundry van cover was discovered by the IRA
