In an investigation that has been ongoing for several years, the FBI arrested two Lodi (pop. 62,000), California men -Hamid Hayat, 22, and his father, Umer Hayat, 47- on charges of lying to the FBI. Pakistanis account for 2,500 of Lodi's residents. Three other local men, including two imams, have been detained for immigration violations.

Keith Slotter, head of the FBI's central California office, alleges several people committed to al Qaeda have been operating in and around the tranquil wine-growing region just south of Sacramento.

"We don't want the new slogan to be, 'Come to Lodi and taste our wines and meet our terrorists,"' said Mayor John Beckman, describing Pakistani-Americans as "a very vibrant, healthy part of the community."

Authorities say Hamid Hayat, 22, returned last year after training in an al Qaeda terrorist camp. His father, Umer Hayat, is alleged to have paid for his son's training at a clandestine Pakistani camp. Both are charged with lying to investigators.

Terrorist cells within the United States have been operating for years. In metropolitan areas such as Chicago and Detroit authorities have been working feverently to penetrate these "cells" and stop the funding of terrorism.
Less publicized are the smaller towns and rural areas where these cells may be in place.

It is increasingly clear that the domestic component of the war against terrorism needs to be revamped at all levels of intelligence and law enforcement, particularly the smaller agencies and jurisdictions. This would include intelligence-sharing and providing federal funds and training to state, county and municipal law enforcement agencies.

Why? How much more revamping of the intelligence agencies and how many more infringements on our rights and freedoms, and how much more money will we have to spend to catch another middle aged immigrant lying?

We're all living in fear of each other and this is what we've got to show for "several years" of investigative work with almost unlimited resources and no more concerns about that pesky judicial system or constitutional rights. We've traded our way of life and given up the things our fathers fought to give us, for what...? Because we're scared of the guy who runs the Kwik-E-Mart? :shk:

The war's over then. We lost. The terrorists got exactly what they wanted, we live in fear and suspicion and we're no longer free. So much for the world's most powerful nation, freedom and liberty for all, united we stand, and all that stuff.

I like it. I reckon if you put a load of 'terrorists' (charged or not, it doesn't matter) in cages in Lodi town square for all to see, you would get people flocking from miles around to behold such a spectacle. The greenbacks would roll in!

It got covered even before that, on ATSNN, by me, within six minutes of the story breaking. But no one would vote the story up. I got a lot of pro-al-Qaeda 'no, your writing sucks' u2u's. I'm glad this story made it through the anti-American bias onto the Board. Breaking news needs to get voted up regardless of style, and needs to get followed up until the whole story is out. Bravo to this thread!

As you all know, I am American Indian, Native. We Natives are quite persistant in our criticism of wrongheaded American policies. But when murderous scum like al-Qaeda come over here- uninvited by the Sovereign Native Nations- and start trying to kill us all, we wish the Americans every success in wiping them out. And we will aid the Americans in that task in every way we can. Any nation or person who does not share these sentiments is-

Not Civilized.

It is part of the Jihadist mindset to use whatever weapons at it's disposal and those provided by the opponent.
Our comparitively free and open society is just such a weapon. Our society of laws, checks & balances, 'innocent until proven guilty' .... generally unknown in their own world are among those tools that will be used against us.
There are other Lodi instances.... there are other "Lackawanna Six" groups, our borders are too porous to keep them out. Our lawmakers are pandering for votes while the enemies of everything that we stand for infiltrate out large and small towns.
When more americans take steps such as the minutemen did recently on the southern border, the safer we will be.
My compliments to CHAKOTAY on the offered wisdom.
