BREAKING: California Police Surround Kidnapping Suspect on Freeway

ALHAMBRA, Calif. — A man suspected in a foiled kidnapping led officers on a freeway pursuit through two Southern California counties Tuesday before he was stopped and surrounded by SWAT team members in armored vehicles.

Authorities boxed the stalled van on a freeway east of downtown Los Angeles after a pursuit that began in the Thousand Oaks area of neighboring Ventura County, authorities said.

After nearly 30 minutes, however, the driver had not left the minivan, which was surrounded by armored vehicles.

Traffic on busy Interstate 10 was backed up in both directions for miles.

"We're at a standoff with the suspect," who was believed to still be carrying the handgun, Johnson said.

Wow, this looks like a tense situation. Things like this usually don't end up well, especially in California.

Funny the guy is still sitting in his car.

This guy is still in the car? That was hours ago.

He was on a pretty long chase, it is more than an hour from Thousand Oaks to Alhambra, especially in traffic.

I don't think they are going to shoot this one though, too much bad publicity.

BTW a friend of mine was killed in a traffic stop in San Diego earlier this year. Apparantly they lied about the stop in the papers ( a police internal investigator told his mom that the news was false and that he was dead and on his way to the hospital within 20 minutes of the stop).

I believe that police violence is way out of control in Los Angeles, I know this guy in the chase today is probably guilty, but I am pretty sure my friend was only guilty of an illegal left turn.

I was stopped and questioned for walking on the sidewalk in broad daylight (in my work clothes, a camel turtleneck and brown slacks, i.e. not looking like a gang member or hooker or drug dealer) by the cops. I was like???????

There are way too many crazy car chases and shootings here. Maybe this chase is justified, since he was supposedly trying to kidnap a woman, but you shouldn't have to fear for your life in a traffic stop.

Yes, this is still going on as of now, no resolution yet.

A Robot just gave him a hard line, I have been absorbed in this ALL dang day. The Sheriffs are really doing a great job keeping the peace.

I have been following the story, I can say something for sure, he is not going any where but to jail from there.

Also I am glad I am not in the traffic mess they have on the highway with all this drama.

I think the longest I ever been caught in traffic was 45 minutes after a spill between Quantico VA and Washington DC.

He's either going to jail or going to kill himself, those are the only two possibilities now. (Barring any unforeseen, intervening events).

People, this guy should have had his brains blown out by the cops a long time ago!

This thing has been going on for hours, if the police of this country are as bad as many on this site have painted them this would not be going on at all! Just my opinion...

The swat team, shot him with teargas, shot him and sent a dog after him...

During the final minutes of the long siege, deputies used a rubber bullet to smash a rear window and used a long pole to shoved a tear gas grenade inside after negotiations failed.

"A deputy shot and wounded the man when he appeared to be pointing a gun at deputies, Carrillo said.

When the driver opened his door as the van filled with smoke, a police dog attacked, tearing his shirt and trying to drag him from the seat. However, he was wearing a seatbelt. Deputies finally managed to unbuckle him and he was dragged out and captured, Carrillo said.

The gunman was shot in the chest by a bullet that went through his right arm. He also had dog bites to his left arm, Carrillo said."

I guess they had to end the siege for rush hour, as I think they reopened lanes at 4:45 pm.
