The Myakka "Skunk Ape" Photographs

Two remarkable new photographs of what may be a Florida Skunk Ape have been discovered through an interesting chain of events by Sarasota resident and animal welfare specialist David Barkasy. Bigfoot! The True Story of Apes in America overviews how these photographs were taken, how this find surfaced, the first reactions and analyses, and some tentative conclusions. For the time being, certain supportive notes will remain, here, available and online

Here is the December 22, 2000, letter signed "God Bless. I prefer to remain anonymous" mailed to the Sarasota Sheriff's Department.

Newspapers in Florida, the Art Bell show, and other radio programs during mid-February, decided to talk about the Myakka photographs. The hope is that the woman photographer will be identified.

In the meantime, meaningful analyses of the eyeshine, the pupil diameter, the dentition, the tongue, hair color, and exhibited behavior of this apparent primate is taking place.
These Coleman enlargements and details were created from the first generation color prints scanned by David Barkasy of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Department's originals. I agree, those are the best "bigfoot" pictures I have seen to date. However, I find it hillarious that in every one, the bigfoot is looking right at the camera. I'm just waiting until they start flashing the "peace" sign.

Staged? Whatever would give you that idea?

seen these before, are there anymore of the same set. gotta love the claims when you get a sighting like this.

Are there any more? Or just these two?
Did anyone else witness this sighting?

I smell more than a "Skunk Ape" on this one. I zoomed the eyes and can't see any pupil diameter, just a bright glow from the entire eye.

If you have any more of these from the same sighting, please post them.

Can anyone identify the plants that are in the foreground, are they native to Florida?????

I can't speak as to the authenticity of the "skunk ape" , but yup, those are saw palmetto plants found extensively in Florida.

My opinion:
If he could take two photos of that ape sitting there and staring at him with his glowing eyes, he could take more.
If he couldnt take more photos, I'm surprised he isnt dead. An ape that size wouldnt be happy if someone entered its territory...

ill have to say, those teeth look pretty good. if its a fake its not bad.

its not like overboard fake... hard to tell. shrug.

should be more photos though. even if this thing took off should still have something.

Looking at camera? FLASH! Flash catches it's attention so it looks. Or some idiot on it's territory catches it's attention.

Have these already been demolished?

They look good but if you open them in photoshop, the aspect ratio is automatically corrected and they look less 'bigfooty'. Also, obviously they were taken with a video so where is that?

The flash theory is nonsense as the flash occurs before he (read: the human in the monkey suit) would have time to react. And the delay flash theory wouldn't hold up as this dude has some serious red eye (unless this is some kind of hippie big foot; he does live out in the wilderness alone afterall).

The some idiot in it's territory theory makes more sense, however, if you look at the picture, this monkey suit is absolutely, perfectly positioned. Look, the featureless back is in full view. The face--most important for details and determining authenticity--is just behind that bush/plant. But wait! Luckily, the eyes are viewable right through those branches to give it that spooky feel. What are the chances of that?

Overall, it is realistic, undoctored looking picture IMO. However, when making extraordinary claims, the burden of proof lies with the person making the claim, not with the people who are trying to be influenced. So, it boils down to a seemingly good picture that is unverifiable one way or the other.

Now talk amongst yourselves.

more ape than bigfoot IMO if it is a legit pic. I believe the pics of the skunk ape are genuine

thanks for posting this one.

My only thinking is, looking at the arms and judging by reach, the last thing I'd be doing is getting up close to flash a camera.

They are either:

A- They are on the top of a really tall hill

B- They only walked 15 feet into the bush to make the photo.


Looks like the bigfoot is gonna be out in the clear open soon. Either its some lazy hoaxers or bigfoot lives in someones backyard.

depends on the camera you use. my digital and my regular cameras all flash a few times before the shot is taken so if it were taken with one of mine, i think it would have time to turn its head and look. but who knows if these are real or fake

Yes, the flashing a few times before the shot is to reduce red eye. And as I said, this dude has some serious red eye.

Why is it looking straight at the camera and why is it smiling in each one? it looks fake. According to Native americian people, if you hurt a bigfoot you get bad luck for the rest of your life? Anyone know if this is true?

Those red eyes really don't look like they were caused by a camera, either skunkape has glowing red eyes (not likeley, if skunkape even exists), or the pictures have (more likeley) been edited.

I agree.
Whenever you see a picture like that, just ask yourself this; if there was a monster sitting only a few metres away from you, would you kindley ask it to pose for you so you could take a picture, or would you run like hell? (or maybe faint or something)

It almost looks animatronic. Maybe part of a amusement park ride or a display in a museum of some sort.

Here's the thing, I'm a pretty big guy and like to consider myself a manly man. That being said, if I was that close to that thing looking at me with those eyes and those chompers, man I'm sure as hell not asking it to say "cheese". I'd probably be wishing I had some diapers on. That's why I think it's BS.

It looks like someone cloaked in fur wearing a mask. In the top picture, there is a foot/hand looking thing at the very bottom of the picture, however other than that there really is no discernable body shape or appendages present on this creature. With how bright the flash is against the plant, I believe more of the creature's body structure would be identifiable. (And again, why is there always only 1 or 2 pictures?? Especially the ones where Bigfoot is unaware of the camera man, I'd be like damn! Use the whole roll!!!) To these picks I cry Fakes!!
