In the April 04 issue of Popular Science I read about a laser mounted on a 747. It was supposed to kill all the missiles that are in service right now, even those flying 3 times the speed of sound. I would like to know if anyone has more information than in the article. Thanks in advance.

Here is a quote for the official site about who is in development and how its undergone.

Airborne Laser Mission

Here is a snip of what type of laser is used to give such a large strong laser beam.

High-energy chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) carried aboard a modified Boeing 747-400F freighter. Capable of autonomous operation at altitudes above the clouds, the Airborne Laser (ABL) will locate and track missiles in the boost phase of their flight, then accurately point and fire the high-energy laser, destroying enemy missiles near their launch areas.
