I have almost too many items in my bag. I have enough esentials to last me a month if need be. Most important is TP! Must have TP TP TP TP, because you know you will need it when you least want to...

And I have a compact one man tent, an entrenching tool, med kit, extra batteries, a couple blades, a couple saws folding, compass, leather gloves, duct tape, sewing kit, kiddling and tinder with iron wool and water proof matches, a butane lighter, ok, you guys get the idea. I am well prepared for myself and others. I could go on but I would revail trade secrets.

If i had to pick 7 things, those would definantly be (in no specific order) a carton of parliaments, a lighter, my 45 with a full clip, a fresh change of boxers, a cell phone, painkillers, and a handheld gps unit.

I don't agree that tuttutkamen ought to have been banned if it was the result of the post above.

He has an interesting temperament to go with his more senior years and wisdom. Also, he was asking for a fourth warn, not a 'fifth and out' warn, and it appears as though his request was not fulfilled.

I wonder if it is a temporary phenomenon. Or whether he has left, rucksack and arsenal and dogs in tow, for NYC.

I have never thought of what I would take. Living nearby a dormant volcano for a while I used to think I would just pull up a chair and watch the fireworks.

The US was much more convivial in the Cold War era, all you would need to do is wander out into your 50s back yard to retire to your pleasantly furnished bomb shelter and continue with the super-clean ultra-friendly family dynamic.

Now you have to worry about what every passer by has got in his rucksack.

Ummm...uhhhh...
My parents still have a "bomb shelter" in their back yard....

If things got that bad, I suppose I would take...(a little bit of stretching the imagination here, so the sky is the limit)

A compass, Zippo lighter with extra fuel/flints/wick, First aid kit, Pain killers, A capsul of poison for a quick death, A GPS unit, a water tin, A mummy bag, A survival knife, Two of the "Bladed" guns from the Blade 2 movie, A M203, A "Last Resort" Katana, Duct tap, A pair of Leatherman pliars, A few M67's, A Few M83's, Bino's, Night Vision, And some body Armor...

Ok, guess my imagination got away with me...

hmmm never had to think about this but let me see what i can think of....

first no knife is going INTO it. neither will a firearm. how stupid are you going to feel when you get into a sticky situation and you go "dammit! i knew i shouldve strapped that damn (insert weapon here) on my hip/leg"
if its not in your hand or readily accessable then you're a statistic waiting to happen. this also saves space IN the rusack for real items. so knives, more than one, you lose one and you'll still have another. think in mutliples. a folding saw or two (they're light weight so pack two or three!)

water proof matches. (or a few lighters, trust me better to have a few than one, lose it, and curse yourself as you rub two damp sticks together praying for a fire), flares. or a chunk/slab of magnesium (very lightweight and produces a very hot burn to start a fire)

mess kit. nothing fancy.

GPS unit (or compass, but thats around my neck, rather worthless in the backpack!)

AMMO (you'll wish you carried fort knox on your back depending how bad things got)

dried foods (living off the land is nice but you gotta have something for when the forest offers you little to eat)

mapping materials, paper, pencil, whatever.

tent (strapped to the bottom of it)

basic hygeine kit. bar of soap, washclothe, toothbrush, toothpaste.

liquid assets. gold, silver, jewelry. (or regular money if its still worth something after the world goes south)

fishing line and some hooks.

canteen and water purifying system. canteen straps ONTO the backpack or my waist.

i'm sure i can think of a few more things, but i have to think spartan, the less you carry the more mobile you are. throw a vehicle into the mix and i can add a bunch more stuff but if its only stuff i can carry on my back then my above list stands.

If 'everything' goes down, a GPS unit won't work (remember, they're fed by DoD satellites). Same too with guns and butane lighters... For awhile, you can use them, but when you 'run out' you'll be looking at an industrial world which is perhaps shut down.. and so is not supplying bullets or refined gasses.

Sure, if I owned a gun I'd bring one along, but, in the long run, if EVERYTHING goes down and you're back where Great to the 30th degree gradpappy Cro-Magnon was at, you'd need a repeating weapon that didn't expend itself. My choice.. a bow and arrow set, with TOOLS to make a new (though obviously less advanced) set after the original had broken down.

Now that I think about it, besides advisor (who mentioned saws), you guys keep forgetting that tools are what make the man, not weapons. Tools make other things, so a man with tools is a man with unlimited weapons.

...Now, as for myself, if all of civilization were going down, i'd make sure to take the BOOKS that could give my kids the edge in the 'new' world. Essentially, the man with chemistry, agricultural, and, perhaps, religious books will run the post-apocalyptic world.

As always, knowledge and manufacturing ability will overcome raw physical strength.

Good point monkey. If everything was destroyed then you SHOULD carry something of value. I doubt it would only be you left as the last survivor. Gold,Silver,Bronze...anything like that you could use as 'trade' items with someone that you might 'meet' in your travels. Say you meet another survivor and you are out of the all important-infamous TP! Use some silver or gold to get some more!

Gold only has value because someone SAYS it does. That is, there are only a few applications for it... So, it's nearly just like the paper dollar. Bronze (the original money) does have value, though, and can actually be used to make things. Have you ever read of an ancient with a gold sword?
Take what can be used... and used to make/control other things.

there will be those who will still think highly of it so i doubt it will be dead weight in my back pack.

and if bronze were so great it wouldnt have been abandoned. and i doubt things would go backwards so much that there'd be an overwhelming need for bronze. people know how to make steel, its not a closely guarded secret and i'm sure there will be those who will mine the ore needed to produce steel, it will be a sought after commodity, it is much stronger than bronze.

tools are nice but lets be honest, are we going to avoid as many people as possible or are we going to join up with other people and form "tribes" and work as a collective for the good of everyone within it? depend on what choice you make here it effects what you'll need.

but lets assume we're all gonna run off on our own and be anti social people, every man for himself. first and foremost, GUNS will get you the tools you need and the transportation to get them where you need/want them. beyond that you can keep them but not worry about having to worry what happens once the bullets run out, you'll have the tools you need to make replacement weapons.

yes knowledge is important but again, are we gonna form into groups or be anti social people? we all dont know everything so either some of us are screwed or some of us are going to form groups.

the first rule there are no rules, you do whatever it takes to live. period, full stop. that includes stealing and killing other people. i am a realist, i doubt many people would spare me, as long as i breath i am a threat to everyone for their food, posessions and shelter. to a greater or lesser extent i think it would become a "everyone man for himself" situation. IF governments collapse and the world really does go south self preservation will be job one and you will find yourself doing things you thought you'd never do.

All weather sleeping bag, A few knives and a sharpening stone, lump of flint, soft wood and hard wood sticks(already prepared) for making fire, largest container I could find and carry for water, compass, detailed map of countryside, survival handbook, guide to edible plants & fungi, book with plans for various ways of producing electricity - wind/solar/water, a catapult/sling and perhaps a bow and arrow. Bullets run out very quickly unless you can make your own.
