In a visit to Australia, new Chinese ambassador Fu Ying warned the country about its missile defense ties with the United States. Australia had recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States, concerning the use of its missile defense radars—of potential use to track both North Korean and Chinese missile launches. Citing mantras about regional strategic stability, and that missile defenses by themselves would not stem the flow of weapons of mass destruction, the ambassador’s statements illustrate China’s opposition to American defenses, which it worries will impede its own ambitions for Pacific dominance.

The only context this makes sense in is the stability required by China to invade Taiwan.

A successful missile defence removes Chinas ability to pre-empt or counterstrike US bases in Japan, Guam and attack US carrier surface battle group(s) without suffering severe consequences.

No Missile Defence,

Lets say the scenario goes something like this; China begins military campaign against Taiwan by using airborne assault, missle bombardment, seaborne assault. Taiwan maintains its defence while Japanese and US air assets out Guam and Japan regain control of the air over Taiwan. Meanwhile a US CBG sails from its position near Japan and arrives near Taiwan after 48 hours.

The Chinese through diplomatic channels send a veiled threat announcing that any more interference with its internal affairs will be met with extreme force. Secretly they had sent the message that they would resort to the stongest weapons in their arsenal to counterattack Japanese and US bases in theatre as well as US west coast bases.

The US President under pressure from an electorate and congress saturated with years of anti-war media coverage following Bush's term in office decides that risk of a wider conflict over Taiwans independence is politically and practically an undoable task since the missile shield defence appropiations were cancelled several years ago leaving the US vulnerable to outright blackmail short of open nuclear war with countries such as China.

The President orders the military to stand down.

I know the above is rather simplistic but I believe something along these lines to be the long term strategy of Chinas military, political and economic actions thought through as an end result.

Re-taking Taiwan would have the effect of serving notice to the rest of Asia and surrounding areas just who is in control and calls the shots, putting a chill on any other countries independent political wishes in the entire region including Australia.

While missile defense systems can hardly be called a mature and reliable defence at this time they do introduce a factor of uncertainty to a belligerant military planners world.

Chinas complaint to the Australians in regard to missile defence/radar on Australian soil says much about their concern with having their strategic deterrent nullified or diminished to such an extent that they lose the ace in hand that prevents the US and others coming to Taiwans aid in a future crisis.

The complaint itself warrants pushing ahead on missile defence in my opinion.

Its reports like this that lay bare the aggressive nature of the current mainland Chinese communist regime. May the people of China soon gather the courage to replace this despotic gang, as the people of Eastern Europe already have.

The only context in which it makes sense for the Chinese government to protest Australia's defence arrangements, is that they want to ensure they have a free hand to carry out armed aggression against its neighbours, especially Taiwan.

The communist Chinese government would have us all believe that its only concern is Taiwan, but does anyone really believe it would end there? What's next, the "Greater Chinese Co-Prosperity Sphere"?

I agree. It looks like China wants to send threatening messages to anyone who might stand in China's way of total dominion over Taiwan and/or possibly other regions such as Southeast Asia.

What can one take from Fu Ying blowing hot air?
Well China must fear the missile defence system for it robs them of the ablity to use nukes as a political and to a lesser extend military weapon. China wont do much more the spew hot air because China needs Aust and its trading partners to export all the cheap and poor quality goods that we buy.

Putting Taiwan away to one side there is no sane reason why China would start a war in the region. Chinas eyes will cast over the Middle east and will look for ways to increase its influnce in Africa before the rest of the world seeks the untaped natuarl resouces.

China is explanding its power thou econmics in that sense it resembles post world war 2 USA. Of course if Chinas econmy grows to fast to soon it could come unstruck although there dosnt seem to be any signs of this.

We can also assume that Chinas missile defence system never got off the ground or it lags far behind the US desgin surely the thought has occured to them?

Of course, our (the australian) ridiculous government insists on americanising Australia and co-operating with the USA regardless of what happens, when in reality it should be China we co-operate with.

Or why not both?

Australia has it tough being the "middle man", but it would be foolish of them to turn a blind eye to either country.

They should use their unique position to their advantage... recieve the best of both worlds.

xpert11, just curious why you think it would be sane for them to start a war over Taiwan but insane otherwise.

the chinese will need natural resources to keep up their expansion, much like japan did pre and during ww2, including the control of Tibet, Taiwan, and Indian lands.

CHinese cival right abuses seem to have been learned from Imperial Japan, ironically the CHinese are becoming the modern version of Imperial Japan.

The Taiwan issue has started many a flame war so I choose to avoid the issue. I never ment to imply that China attacking Taiwan was a good idea.

They went to Iraq which was abs ridiculous IMO..
And with such bold aggressive statements from china.. Australi won't meekly comply.. everybody's on their own personal ego cruise..

IMO China is very very seriously over estimating itself in military might and is forgetting that it is only a "to-be superpower" (assuming everything goes as planned) and is not even close to being a real superpower as of now.

China seems to be throwing its seemingly non existant weight around and is over doing it.

I agree with Stealth Spy,

Well the amount of defense contracts and testing sites that the US has been doing within the last year tells me that the US and AUS are in it for the long haul just like cousins should be.

metal storm is a nice little aus company that was been working with the US for a while now, AUS is calling China's bluff for now until CHina forgets herself and crosses the line between bluff and real action.

But I agree CHina is trying to strench its wings as a superpower eagle but its has just to grow feathers, if i was china I would slow down a bit. Lest CHina pulls a Stalin gutting yoru future to be powerful today. sadly it seems that CHina is becoming power hungry and drunk from the feeling.

wish they wouldnt would rather be happy happy friends than bitter enemies but it looks liek CHina has chosen.

That is one of the most uninformed statements I have every heard.
