Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday his government was interested in nuclear energy and could start talks with Iranian partners to study possible atomic and solar power projects.

Chavez, a fierce critic of the United States and a leftist ally of Communist Cuba, said Venezuela and other Latin American countries could develop nuclear energy as an alternative power source for civilian purposes.

Venezuela, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, is a key energy supplier to the United States, but its relations with Washington have soured since Chavez came to office six years ago promising to fight poverty with a raft of social reforms.

Given that Venezuela is the worlds 5th largest oil exports I doubt they need nuclear power for peacefull purposes. It begs the question why or what dose Venezuela need nukes?

Perhaps Hugo Chavez has learnt from North Korea and will try to blackmail the USA in order to obtain aid money to fund social reforms.

Much could depend on the "social reforms" they could backfire in the long term . If the reforms involve reditrubuting land from wealthly owners and other communist ideals they could be the knife in the back of the Chavez government. However if the reforms invovle improving the quality of life then much benfit my be gained from them.

Is Chavez a left wing nut case who cant keep his mouth shut or dose he really want Venezuela to be a Nuclear power?

How will the USA and the UN deal with this matter? Bearing in mind the UN repersends the members desired actions.

UN will talk him to death. The US will say no, wait a while for him to stop, and if he does not........Woo Hoo, more oil for us, less for everyone else.

Yeah. More oil for us. I can't afford the gas prices of another "oil for us" takeover!

Just what we need, even higher gas prices. I doubt Venesula will get anywhere. Chances are we'll scream at them for a few hours, they'll get tired and scrap the project because of budget problems.

That or we'll invade on another crusade for oil.

It must be disturbing for americans given that there isnt alot of options a full scale invaison is out of the question. An air and naval blockade could be an option. Given that south american governments can be unstable the thought of a hostile regime coming to power with nukes at arms reach cant be a nice thought.

Perhaps the CIA will assit a dictator in overthrowing the democratically in order to put a puppert in power it will work fine untill the strings come lose.
