Patriot Act 2: Alive and well

Sen. Pat Roberts is writing a new measure that would renew teh Patroit Act and expand government powers. The new bill will allow the FBI to subpoena records without going before the courts to get permission.

" the measure being written by Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., would give the FBI new power to issue administrative subpoenas, which are not reviewed by a judge or grand jury, for quickly obtaining records, electronic data or other evidence in terrorism investigations, according to aides for the GOP majority on the committee who briefed reporters Wednesday."

(trying to sound naive) But don't Republicans believe in *smaller* government, and keeping the government out of our lives? Golly, this doesn't sound like it will do that!
