I wondered this as well when it hit the news that the tradition was broken the past two years. I am can not help but think perhaps it is a offering in hopes of resurrection. The cognac is made with eaux-de-vie which is sometimes called "waters of life". I would like to know about this as well it takes an extreme level of devotion even for a group to keep up something like this.
