CAIRO, Egypt (AP) _ The first ever facial reconstructions based on CT scans of King Tutankhamun's mummy have produced images strikingly similar to the boy pharaoh's ancient portraits, Egypt's top archaeologist said Tuesday.

One of the models shows a baby-faced young man with chubby cheeks and a round chin _ with a resemblance to the famous gold mask of King Tut found in his tomb in 1922 by British excavation Howard Carter.

Three teams of forensic artists and scientists _ from France, the United States and Egypt _ built models of the boy pharaoh's face based on some 1,700 high-resolution photos from CT scans of his mummy to reveal what he looked like the day he died nearly 3,300 years ago.

``The shape of the face and skull are remarkably similar to a famous image of Tutankhamun as a child where he was shown as the sun god at dawn rising from a lotus blossom,'' said Zahi Hawass, Secretary-General of the Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The CT scans _ the first ever carried out an Egyptian mummy _ have suggested King Tut was a healthy, yet slightly built 19-year-old, standing 5 feet, 6 inches tall, at the time of his death.

Yeah, I guess we are supposed to believe the CT scans picked up on the long eye lashes and make up.

What a crock!

CT scans don't tell skin color...so what you see is pretty much what they made up. It's the skull, ears, etc that's real.

Well, ears and nose are largely guesswork, but an excellent depiction could be found simply looking at his death mask....

Still, very cool stuff...

Three teams of forensic artists and scientists - from France, the United States and Egypt - each built a model. They look like three different people -- not WILDLY different - but maybe guys who could be expected to enter in a King Tut Look-alike contest: same basic look, you get the idea, but each is a little different

Only the French one is being shown widely (perhaps because it is the only one that is colored). This is the one that looks like a female Sinead O'Connor wannabe circa 1993.

The Egyptian one looks a bit homely -- a regular guy.

The Americans (who didn't know who they were working on) made a Tut that looks more like the French than the Egyptian--but not quite so effeminate.

Shows that this is an art and not a science

Can anyone explain to me why his skull is so strange looking? I have seen a lot of bald men in my day, but never one whose head was shaped like his.

As to Tut looking effeminate, he was the BOY king you know. He just looks like a kid to me, not a girl (except for the eyeliner).

Got any links to the other images? I'd love to take a look at them.

Off of this link is a link to see a photo gallery of the reconstruction. You can see the U.S. and Egyptian team's gos in profile there.

The only thing I saw on that came out of the press release:

Before the artists began their work, Egyptian and international experts in anatomy, pathology and radiology, led by Dr. Madiha Khattab, dean of medicine at Cairo University, spent two months analyzing the CT images.

They concluded, for example, that Tut's elongated skull was a normal anthropological variation, not a result of disease or congenital abnormality. They noted his thin face and pronounced overbite - buck teeth. Egyptologists said overbites ran in his family, like the Hapsburg lip of more recent royal history.
