A former Russian nuclear energy minister has been arrested in Switzerland at the request of authorities in the United States, where he is wanted on suspicion of money laundering, Swiss officials said today.
Yevgeny Adamov is accused of diverting $US9 million ($11.64 million) of US Department of Energy funds, intended for nuclear safety programs in Russia, to bank accounts in Pennsylvania and Delaware, according to a news report.
Adamov, who was a minister until 2001, was detained on Monday in the capital Bern, said Folco Galli, a spokesman for the Swiss Federal Office of Justice.
He was questioned today, Mr Galli said.
