Hey, The army and Marine Corps are already phasing out the M16A2's and issuing the M16A4's to those in Iraq.....Some even are getting M4's.
This has been a change in the works for a couple years and will probably happen alot sonner than 2008

I heard they were going to use a varient of the amt long slide with less
recoil and a smaller barrle and magazine.

I know the HK XM8 is next up but we are taking the M-14 out of storage awfully fast and putting them back into use since the 5.56 AR just cant reach the combat ranges in Iraq. A super modern M-14 may very well be on the drawing boards.

I don't think they will put any M-14 in large operational use if any, when the XM-8 enters service it will fire a 5.56mm round, however I read somewhere that later on the XM-8 will be refitted to fire a 6.8mm round.

M-14's coming back into service is as implausible as M1911's coming back into service, just not gonna happen.

My bets are on a modified XM8 with the 6.8 or 6.5mm rounds, or a AR-15 like rifle with a gas system ala AK-47 and a receiver and barrel for 6.8/6.5mm rounds.

I doubt they are withdrawing their M16A2's, they will probably just change the receiver on them so they can be fitted with some fancy Pintanny rail sights.

And why change to the M4 if they already have a range issue?

I believe the military opened up the XM-8 to competition recently as its next replacement.
