A report released by the U.S. Army on Saturday outlined the events of the evening of March 4, when Italian intelligence agent Nicola Calipari was
mistakenly shot to death by U.S. soldiers. Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena, who had been held hostage by Iraqi militants for a month, and another
Italian intelligence agent were wounded when the soldiers fired on their car as it approached a U.S. checkpoint on the way to Baghdad airport.
The report said the soldiers were ordered to block the road to all traffic until then-U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte passed on his way to Camp
Victory, a U.S. military base near the airport.
The report defines an Alert Line as the point on a roadblock where the soldiers are alert to possible danger from an approaching vehicle; the Warning
Line is the point past which an intruder elicits the firing of warning shots.

This unfortunate young man had just rescued a hostage from insurgents, and was running for his life through hostile territory. He should have
recognized our presence as a refuge from those he sought to flee. A bit of order among the chaos.
Instead, pumped with adrenaline and not trusting anyone that would try to stop him, he chose to attempt to ram a U.S. Army barricade. You just
don’t do that if you want to stay alive.
It’s not that our troops are rabid killers, they’re not. They are men and women like you and I, doing a service to this nation. They have a job
to do, and they did it here, as the findings of this investigation have shown.
It is unfortunate that some individuals do not seem to understand this and choose to test the boundaries of our military might, placing themselves in
harm’s way unnecessarily.
