New National ID Cards to Battle Terrorists?

House Republicans attached the bill to a must-pass supplemental spending package for troops in Iraq without first putting it through the usual legislative scrutiny of hearings and debate. Should it emerge intact from House-Senate negotiations over the spending package, it could be law next month.

Touted as an antiterrorism measure, the ''Real ID Act" would also overturn laws in nine states that allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses. If a state does not comply with any provision of the law, its residents would no longer be able to use their driver's licenses for federal identification purposes, such as for boarding a plane.

I'm not quite sure that I get it...

I find it kind of strange that they tried to sneak this in by attaching it to an Iraq War spending bill. Is it normal to do things like that (attach completely unrelated bills to another that is considered a "must pass" bill)?

Sounds pretty underhanded to me, but I really don't know if it is the norm. Why bother unless there is something to hide?

Jah. They do this a lot. Take a bill that HAS to get passed, like a budget thing, and attach something on page 347 that is small or wouldn't get passed on it's own. People aren't likely to find it, and even if they do they're stuck passing it because they have to.

I remember when this info came out the first time. I have been a big fan of National ID cards for a while. I see no loss of privacy with only gains in ease for the government and the people of the nation. There's nothing wrong with the ID, especially if you combine it with other cards you have, then it's really useful instead of just taking up space.

Anyway, the drivers licence is still a far cry from a Nat'l ID card. All it says is "check to see if they're a bloody person before giving them a licence."

waste of time. any id can be faked even passports. just look at all the effort that is put into makeing money harder to copy. here i beleive it was the newwer ten doller bill that was toted as being sooooo secure. within two weeks of release there was tonns of phoney new ten doller bills found in circulation. waste of time and money. ANYTHING that can be made can also be forged as well. yet one more thing to make people feel secure that when you get down to it is patheticaly useless. as for driver's licences, just how many fakes do teenagers buy a year so that they can drink. and they imply that they are secure except for illigals able to get them

Of course an I.D. card can be faked or stolen etc. But it will never the less emerge, perhaps sooner than we think. After all who wouldn't want to dicard every single other card in their possesion for an all in one. I believe that this card like all other cards will fail simply for its own tangiblness!

Success of these cards is a mute point. I believe that the designers of these cards in fact want them to work only long enough for a new concsiense to arise in society. A couple of peaceful years doting these things about may make life a little easier at the check out, but will undoubtedly dull our sences to our total dependancy upon them.

However, with continuing identity theft, and the rising need to keep better track of our children, the masses will yurn for and accept any new and improved id card. one which cannot be stolen or duplicated and easily tracked-the mark! At that time the failure of these plastic id cards will be come their greatest success.

Just like jews didn't see any lost of privacy when IMB machines assigned them a ID number on their arms.

You'll notice I said national ID card. I don't support labelling one group and not the others, that isn't right at all. Also, we're giving people a number electronically for later use, NOT tattooing it on their arm to be used to help eliminate a population.

Like I said above, this scenario is neither.
