I found this storie about a wooly mammoth.

THAI "HAIRY MAMMOTHS" REPORTEDLY PHOTOGRAPHED

On December 6, 2000 came one of the more incredible media stories of the year. Australian news sources stated that Thai scientists were going into Thailand's northern jungles to investigate sightings of large hairy elephants resembling the long-extinct woolly mammoth. The search was triggered by the release of aerial photographs of the mysterious beasts taken by Princess Rangsrinopadorn Yukol, who has a keen interest in forest and wildlife conservation. The blurry images sparked excitement among those who believe the animals may be a new elephant species, or even long-lost descendents of the Pleistocene mammoth.

"I'm not absolutely convinced that the pachyderms are the same species as the mammoths, but I think the possibility is high," elephant specialist and veterinarian Prasit Molichart told The Nation newspaper. "This is a great discovery."

But other elephant experts dismissed the idea of a new species of pachyderm. "It's just not possible. There's no way that it's a new species," said Richard Lair from the Elephant Conversation Center in the northern town of Lampang. He noted that the supposed "mammoths" may be really just young elephants that have not completely shed their baby hair.

"When they're born, elephants almost always have a lot of hair. Some elephants keep the hair longer than others, and from what I saw in the photos, it looks like that was the case here," he said.

Here is the site with more stories www.anomalist.com...

I think they could be maybe an adapted version of an elephant....evolved to keep its hair? Not a different species...just...an adapted one?

Itf i recall correctly, it was more than just that they were hairy (infact, they weren't very hair at all), it was that their skulls were significantly more like those of ancient and extinct species of elephants. I recall that they had gotten some genetic samples that didn't really support them being a differnt species, or at least not one that had been thought to have gone extinct long ago, but perhaps a new incipient species (or merely a local variation) that was something of a 'throwback'.

Just a question. Wouldn't Thailand be a tad to warm and humid for a hairy pachyderm, being as they do not have any internal cooling system? Don't elephants have to flag their ears alot and bath in water and mud to keep cool? That would mak for one messy mammoth!!

There aren't any pictures... perhaps someone can link to those? I can confirm what the site said; that baby elephants have a significant amount of hair on their bodies.

However, without any more documentation, it's just a "wild story."

I'm unclear if the OP is talking about a woooly elephant or about the 'living fossil' elephants that i mentioned.

Here is a page of the expeditions.

The 'domed' elephant, thought by some to be either a living fossil from a prehistoric era, or an evolutionary 'throw-back'.

Well, a species of mammoth lived on the Baffin/Elsmere/Rengal islands but with one difference, they were midgets. The B/E/R islands couldn't support large graving mammals, but could support smaller ones and still do. The mini-mammoth lived for over 1000-2000 years after the big-mammoth died out.

Thats chupabras that travel on the inter-dimensional express. Bigfoot takes Flying Saucers. Anyways, like I said, midget mammoths lived a couple thousand years after original died, so who knows.
