Ahhh!! Earth is going to be blown away into pieces if an huge astroid hits us!!

I know this sounds very unlikely since we have not detected any astroids that are heading even close to our planet or galaxy even if there was it will take a very very very long time to get here.

However anything can happen!! What if there was a worm hole opened space and dumps a huge astroid towards to earth!

Now lets pretend that an astroid is on its way to earth. How can we prevent it from killing us?? Shoot rockets at it?

Ive noticed how other planets have astroid belts circling around their planet which makes a pretty good barrier against objects entering the planet. Can we make a similar belt around our little planet?

Send huge blocks of cement into our orbit and chain them up together to make a really long belt!!!

If we put huge blocks of cement around the Earth it will block off sunlight.

Doesn't work that way. Wormholes don't just 'open.'

We should watch the sky, think, and pray to God that it doesn't get to that point. The suckers are notoriously hard to follow. A little funding wouldn't hurt.

Personally, I think we should build a giant catapault and launch all the flaming idiots who say "THE RIGHT OWNS THE MEDIA!" or who say "THE LEFT OWNS THE MEDIA!" Kill three birds with a whole bunch of stones.

I think it'd end up like Armageddon the movie....launch some poor guys to blow it up with nukes....we'd still die anyway but it'd be good for a laugh

silly people on an asteroid....

Time and space is the secret to keeping the Earth safe from asteroids. If an asteroid comes at the Earth from an orbit which brings it heading towards the Earth FROM the Sun ---- well, at this time, we are doomed! OK, now that this possibility has been mentioned, the good news is that if the asteroid is detected heading towards the Earth from another angle, and we see it early enough (time) and the asteroid is far enough (space), then we have a chance to take some action. If the asteroid is far enough, then a simple "bump" from a missile could divert the asteroid. It doesn't take much -- even a few centimeters -- could be enough to cause the asteroid to miss the earth by tens of thousands of miles (perhaps even more) but this really depends upon how far away the asteroid was before we nudged it's orbit. If we have only a few weeks or days to deal with an asteroid, then things get a little stickier. We could, depending upon the size of the asteroid, use nuclear weapons to "blow it to smithereens". The only problem is that all of those "smithereens" -- or little chunks of meteor -- will still head towards the earth. We can only hope that most of these chunks of asteroid will burn up in the atmosphere. If not, then the Earth is in for one hell of a disaster. But hey! It's happened before and, what the heck, aren't we already doomed by: solar flares, tsunamis, killer super volcanoes, holes in the ozone, pollution, global warming, etc. etc.

Humm ive never thought about that before. But I mean just a stripe of blocks. Shouldnt block through that much sunlight. If it does then make the blocks out of really strong see through material

Now that I think about that. If we build a HUGE glass ball around earth, will that protect us from the sun's deadly rays?

god just think how much material would be needed ti surround the earth even a millimerter thick. besids the manufacturing aspect. it would also possibly creat a real global warming problem. just think about a solarium on a home, or your car on a sunny day.
not to mention of course that it would be useless as it would just shatter.
now if we could invent some kind of force field, hmm that could work.

probably the best method of defence would be to catch it early enough, and attatch a few moters to it. this could possibly divert it. blowing it up would stop a masive impact. unfortunately it would cause one heck of a metior shower that possibly could do even more damage.

Not strictly true: have a look at MN4 asteroid . Whilst there have been revisions to this, it is thought this Near Earth Asteroid still constitutes a danger:

"December 24 Update: 2004 MN4 is now being tracked very carefully by many astronmers around the world, and we continue to update our risk analysis for this object. Today's impact monitoring results indicate that the impact probability for April 13, 2029 has risen to about 1.6%, which for an object of this size corresponds to a rating of 4 on the ten-point Torino Scale. Nevertheless, the odds against impact are still high, about 60 to 1, meaning that there is a better than 98% chance that new data in the coming days, weeks, and months will rule out any possibility of impact in 2029. "

All I have been wondering was mainly about the Earth getting hit. But what about the moon!!?!?! The moon is much smaller compared to the Earth and and good sized astroid will have the destructive potential to actually destroy the moon! And then the peices from the moon will most likely fall to earth

Not really - the Earth-Moon system is more like a "binary planet" as the Moonis about a quarter of the Earth's diameter. See here for a very good "simulation" of the system.

However, the point is taken - an asteroid hitting the Moon could be catastrophic - though being smaller than Earth, and having a smaller gravity, the chances are that an incoming ateroid would actually hit the Earth "first" IMO. But, as they say, if it's going to happen, there's precious little we can do about it....

The asteroid that may hit in 2029....that's a scary thought....earth would be quite wrecked if that happened....could we be hit outta orbit around the sun? kinda like a game of pool. Maybe we could spiral into the sun!

Dont worry it wont happen, this is Project EOTA-Z96 that Area 51 has under its control its a non event go back to sleep.

you oculd do the glass bubble thing. except you would make it so there are gaps in it eg triangle shapes but with hollow area to allow heat out and smaller opbjects out as you only need to protect against large objects so the structure doesnt need to be close together. but the material needed would have to be super strong lol diamond or even an elastic feel to it to bounce it off.

We need funding we need deep space shuttles and a decent nuke to play we but keep it out of the hands of a child (Bush).

Their in the process - read 'UFO Saves Earth' post.
Mayhaps' that's why the world powers have not been fully involved with building an Astroid Missle Defence System.. we already have an EBE/UFO system of Astroidal Defence in place.
