Thousands flee volcano in Ethiopia

www.yahoo.com...

Thousands of civilians in a remote part of northeastern Ethiopia are being evacuated because of potentially dangerous volcanic activity, officials said Friday.

The evacuations come after steam eruptions have been seen since Thursday from the long-dormant volcano of Mount Dofen, raising fears of a volcanic eruption that could put many people at risk.

Also, volcanic mud flowing from Dofen has caused huge cracks on critical infrastructure, including on major roads, and dozens of properties have been severely damaged in the region of Afar, according to the Afar Region Disaster Risk Management.

I had no idea Ethiopia had volcanos.
will we see more tectonic action in 2025?

sad that such a third-world country with few resources has to deal with something like this. hopefully they're getting help.

I remember something about a rifft valley where Africa is splitting in that area. Should eventually turn in to something like the Mediterranean Sea.

First, thank you for starting Volcano Watch for 2025.
As to this eruption, the Great Rift Valley runs through Ethiopia. There are a lot of volcanoes along it.
Dofen is just one of these. It is what is known as a Shield volcano. Shield volcanoes are the largest in the world, but don't have the explosive eruptions like other volcanoes which normally 'build mountains'.
It is located in the Afar region/desert and some scientists predict when the plate finally splits a new sea will be formed!
These people are nuts to be staying so close to it when it started erupting!

I live in a flood zone and I'd dearly love to relocate, but the money just isn't there.
if global warming was such an existential threat, you'd think tptb would be relocating people. not happening.

bad thing about volcanos, they sit there for centuries without event, then one day, boom.

Scientists warn of volcano erupting off Oregon coast this year

www.sciencenews.org...

470 kilometers off the Oregon coast and over a kilometer beneath the waves, a volcano known as Axial Seamount ticks all the boxes that hint at imminent activity, Chadwick and his colleagues reported December 10 at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Washington, D.C.

apparently this is not related to the Cascadia event many fear will happen soon.
underwater volcs don't have the impact of surface ones, and are mostly unseen.

Where is Axum in relation to this geographical area?

They used to say that when the climate got warmer, volconos erupt more and cool the earth back down. I researched the logic of that, it seems it is actually feasible. The warming elevates the core temperature a little and it increases volcanic activity some how.
