i had a cousin that used to do that with his hands but he wasn't Right in the Head.
Also just Talking to People that use their Hands drives me nuts Kinda like Harris

Why is it now, we have to watch 1/4 of all breaking news report screens taken up by some guy flashing what look like gang symbols (sign language), when it would be just as easy to turn on subtitles? If people can see, then they can read! Seriously!

Why are we burdening everyone else by taking up 25% of every breaking news screen with some guy, or gal, fumbling around with sign language? Seriously, this is just another woke initiative. Every single video on any video streaming service (U-toob and every other) has ample amounts of subtitles (in multiple languages). Having every news story taken up by some person flashing finger symbols is...well...offensive to me!

This distracts me, and I can't pay attention to the video with this nonsense!

So, stop it...dammit!!

edit - And BTW, if you have someone who knows sign language translate this stuff it makes zero sense (most of it). Most of these people are just fumbling around without knowing what they're saying. It doesn't translate at all. (Some does, but most of it is nonsense just for show. This has been proven on numerous occasions).

So I’m curious, why do they (mostly all I’ve seen) do the over exaggerated mouthing of words?

They aren’t mouthing the word so a lip reader would know what they are saying, they do the odd face thing and mouth some random syllable. Just something I’ve always wondered because the signer is obviously not deaf.

Many Deaf signers also utilize verbal language, as in they're not all totally mute. Making facial expressions can also change the context of what's being said; they're modifiers. They're the same facial expressions (yes, exaggerated) that hearing people make but are less aware of. Interpreters likely have their own unique style or flair, just like everybody has a unique 'voice.'

Think of it this way, how do you yell in ASL? How do you convey different nuances? It's all in the exaggeration, or subtlety, of visual cues.

You'll actually see this a lot in old silent movies.

Hope this answers your question.
