The Proud Prophet simulation, conducted on June 20, 1983, remains one of the most realistic war games in US military history. Designed to assess strategies during the Cold War, it tested how a conflict between the US and the Soviet Union could escalate into nuclear war. Key figures like JCS Chairman John W. Vessey and Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger played critical roles, adhering to standard military policies during the simulated crisis. The grim outcome highlighted the catastrophic consequences of a nuclear conflict: nearly half a billion fatalities and extensive radiation fallout, leaving survivors to face starvation or radiation sickness.

1983 exercise for some reason is headlined in several news organs today. presumably in response to Putin's nuclear saber rattling.

as someone said, nuclear war can not be won and must not be fought.
hoping Putin gets the memo.

That is the atomic weapon conundrum. Gotta have them because the other guy has them. Can't use them because the other guy has them.

What do we do now?

A nuke war can be won. That's the problem. Would it be a Pyrrhic victory? Most likely, but that has never stopped an aggressor. When all sides have nukes, stock up on iodine tablets and taters, as it's only a matter of time.

Your possibility of winning a nuclear war seems to be of a definition of winning I was previously unaware of.

Even if you win the actual war, the world will still be polited with radioactive fallout.
